Greetings all!

So, I’ve been going through my various clone builds and taking the lowers apart and replacing them with the various appropriate Palmetto lowers... M41, M16A4, M16A2, etc.

If I’m correct, didn’t the SPRs use old M16A1 lowers?

Palmetto hasn’t released one as far as I know, and who knows if they ever will.

Since I needed to remove the old lower anyway, what should I use to build it back up?A4? A2?

Yes, these are the kinds of questions I stay up late pondering... :-D

Thanks!

Yes on the A1.
Nodak if your willing to wait or 80% and engrave .mil markings for 100% clone correctness.
If you just want to pay-2-play, Pri & Brownell's both make A1 receivers that are the correct profile but their roll marks.
(Not a bash, my Mod 0 has a brownell's A1 retro lower)

I’m almost tempted to wait and see if Palmetto will come out with one, just so that it will match my others.

Who is “Pri”? Is that Precision? Yumpin Yimminy, they charge like three times what Palmetto does! Is it markedly better or something?

A1 lowers cost more because they're a lower volume item.  For every A1 that PRI, Brownells, or Nodak sells, PSA probably sells a dozen A2's, or more.

Brownells has their black A1's on sale now: https://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/receiver-parts/receivers/lower-receivers/ar-15-m16-a1-lower-receiver-sku080001304-107496-174441.aspx

PRI are the ones that made most of the iconic parts for the original SPR, and their 80s and finished lowers to me look better than my Brownells and fairly close to Nodak's.

If we're asking if or why PRI's markedly more costly or expensive than Palmetto State, I'd be curious how you made it this far doing clone builds? Because last I checked nothing about the SPR/Mk12 is cheap.

M16A1 is the correct lower

Get a PRI 80% (like below) or Brownels lower and try to find someone that still does colt markings.

I’m stuck in Kalfironia, 80% lowers are problematic

I went with a black anodized Nodak Spud A1 lower on mine.

McKay Ent. does have an A1 profile "no logo" lower, but only available in black right now (XM Grey is OOS). PSA Stealth is an A2 profile and not correct for a Mk12 Mod 0. Brownells and Nodak Spud are the only other two that offer A1 profile "no logo" lowers.

I spoke with Black Creek Precision and they said they would be interested in doing a batch of M16A1 lowers. They’ve done several runs of M16A2 and A4 in the past. Just started discussing it with them, so I don’t have any of the specifics yet. I’m also not sure if they have the ability to do the “Colt gray” anodizing. Are the gray more desirable for clones?

That's a fairly ambitious project.  I know they've gotten a lot of love here for their A2 and A4-marked lowers, but there's more to an A1 than just a rollmark.  Not that it wouldn't be nice to have another option for folks, but I just hope they're actually going to do an A1 profile...

Grey anodizing seems to be a bit tricky.  Brownells has struggled with it; US Anodizing seems to have it nailed in, when they have the time to do it.

Grey is certainly desirable for the retro crowd.  Just from this thread, it seems the Mk12 folks aren't as sold on it.  I don't know enough to know what's correct on a Mk12--I don't have enough time to read the 1000+ page clone thread to find out.    The "donor" A1 lowers would have started grey, but they certainly could have been refinished at some point over the last 50 years...
