My dad is has had some trouble with his hand lately.  The recoil from shooting pistols systems to exacerbate it.  We typically shoot 115-gr ammo out of full-size pistols.

Any recommendations on ammo with softer recoil?

This different recoil impulse. Maybe time to start shooting .45ACP.

all-metal or poly frame pistols?

all-metal frames will soak more energy than a poly frame pistol.
maybe think about adding a weight to it if it has a light rail on it (like a weaponlight with dead batteries) you can also purchase or make metal weights for the gun

it makes the gun heavier, but it will shoot noticeably softer

I shoot the cheap (at Walmart) 115 grain FMJ Federal ammo.  Last time I bought some it was under $19 for a box of 100 rounds.

My P09 9MM has so little recoil it feels weird to shoot it.  The steel and aluminum framed CZ Compacts have way more felt recoil than the P09.

A few years ago, I had medical condition that affected my shooting hand.  I could definitely tell that 147 gr. ammo had lighter recoil.

If you have to shoot 115 gr. ammo, Remington UMC seems milder than others.

.22LR  (with a conversion, or better yet .22 LR pistol.)

Thanks, gents.  I almost bought 124gr last time for this reason, but I will try 147gr instead.

All metal is less harsh for him.

I have handed folks an CZ75 SP-01 and they tended to like it better.

If he wants to stay in the game, a nice revolver can be an awesome range toy. Loads can be reduced way below where most semiauto would run and there will be no reliability or accuracy issues.

And I also agree that a nice Ruger Mk XX or S&W 41 are a great way to keep him in the game too.

Go for the cheap stuff. Always thought federal aluminum, blazer, tula, and wolf were rather mild. Avoid anything from a .mil manufacturer.

Beware, I couldn't get my 1911 to run on steel or aluminum cases, they wouldn't feed correctly. I speculate the lighter than brass cases threw the balance of the cartridge off. Maybe so, maybe not, but if I feed them brass they run so not wrth my trouble.

Other guns don't give a damn what they get fed.

Might be a good time for a 22. Get one similar to his 9mm.

Maybe it's time for a Five-seveN

It's 9MM, and all pretty soft shooting.
124 grain shoots soft, with less edge.
I never tried 147, but it should be a bit softer and milder.
Try a recoil reducing guide rod spring assembly if that doesn't get it down enough.
Something like this.

The cheap yellow box Rem-UMC followed by the green box Remington is some of the weakest 9mm you can shoot. the 115 barely cycles the UZI.

heavier bullets will have less recoil pulse. try 147gr

Any subsonic load with heavy bullet will serve you well.. usually 147 or 158

Tried Sellier and Bellot 124gr (SB9B) today.  He found it softer and very comfortable.

As a side note, while my dad and I have always been very close, shooting together has been one of his favorite activities lately.  He's in excellent health for his age, but it won't last forever.  Cherish your parents while they're around.

Agree.
My father passed away 2 years ago. We also enjoyed shooting together.
I still regret not having spent more time with him..

Really wish that stuff was priced better as I would like to try it. It’s a small enough market that it will probably never be super cheap.

I'm working on testing this. Waiting on my CMMG 16" carbine. I will say the bullets are SOFT. I made new bullet shapes simply trying to pull them with my collet puller :D
