There is a possibility that I may be gone for about a year for an overseas job. I'll be leaving my ARs with my family for the time being. I was thinking of applying cosmoline and putting it in a vacuum seal bag. What products do you guys recommend and I've never used cosmoline before. Do you have to wipe off the oil first before applying it

For only a year you are way over thinking it. Spray with a quality lube like boeshield that will provide a protective film and you will be fine

Agreed. I have guns that have been in my safe for over a year with only what I had last cleaned and lubed them with and they are just fine.

Clean, lube, and put away. You are overthinking it unless your parent's place is constantly in a salt spray you should be fine.

You may be overthinking the issue. I have guns I never shoot so I use Breakfree Collector on them. No traces of corrosion after years, much less one year.

Sorry if I'm overthinking I just live in the south of the state where it's super humid. Thanks for the answers

Slip2000 is what I've used.

A couple golden rods in a safe has done well in West TN sauna for over a decade.

Use a nice coat of WD40 Specialist anti corrosion spray.  Shouldn't have any issues for a year of storage.

VCI bag or just some Breakfree Collector on metal surfaces. Big thing do not leave them in a foam type gun case.

For outside the gun, I just use Renaissance Wax and apply them with a microfiber towel. I put the firearm into a gun sock and pelican case with a eva dry that I recharge every so often.

Even before this I'd just use whatever oil and microfiber towel to wipe it before storing it away in a gun sock.

Never had any issue for decades.

Yup your over thinking it.
I use Birchwood Casey Barricade spray on the outside of all my guns.
A light mist and a wipe with a soft clean rag, and your good.

Also on Ar rifles, not much to rust.
Alunium, plastic?

Zerust rifle bags.. if i were to leave my rifles sitting for over a few years outside a safe.

I live in a humid environment and bought a few zerust capsules and stuck em in the safe a couple years back, never had any issues with rust.

And ill be honest im too lazy to do any maintenance like re apply oil or any kind of protective coating. They just sit in a safe with the zerust and a golden rod for years without any sign of rust.

I just wish i had more free time to go hunting or to the range and actually use what i got

If they're being stored indoors, you should have nothing to worry about, even with higher humidity levels.  Just clean, then wipe down, and put in storage.

If they're being stored in an unconditioned space, where the humidity levels are moving up and down, and the temps are dropping below freezing and back up etc., you'll have a lot more opportunity for condensation on the surfaces and would need to be concerned.  If they're in the house, I wouldn't do anything special.

Silicone impregnated gunsock, placed in a plastic vacuum bag

Hornaday One Shot is excellent. Spray down the steel parts, let it dry, store rifle with VCI chips/cartridge.

As mentioned above RIG grease. Easy to remove if you ever decide to shoot it, unaffected by long term storage.

Agreed. Boeshield T9 is great product.

Also, I kinda wonder if Fluid Film might be a good option

I found a NOS Colt 6920 last year from 2013.....it had never been opened and was fine stored in plastic bag with CLP so long term doesn’t necessarily mean cosmoline
