At the time, Armalite lower was the best one could get (via a complete rifle)

I wonder how does a late 90's Armalite lower compare to modern lower, like Spikes for example? Is there any reason at all to upgrade?

In terms of what? Metallurgy? Features? Cool points?

If you have a NFA lower, it was made on or before 86 and people seem to have plenty of it. There's nothing stopping you from taking any AR15 lower and putting modern triggers, or furniture.

So it's unclear what you want out of a Spikes lower. If anything, you'd want to keep it as original as possible, but there's nothing stopping you from upgrading the lower you already have.

You have an old Armalite?
If it was a CT legal transferable preban, you could sell it in the EE. You could probably get $800 easily for that stripped lower receiver (if it was CT preban).
Think of what you could do with that money.

^That's what I would do with it.

I send all the preban stuff I find to the guys behind enemy lines.

As I indicated in OP, it's a late 1990's item so cannot possibly be preban, unless you mean some other ban, not the 1994 one.

I built my current 3 gun rifle on an Armalite low end Eagle receiver in about 96, when I tired of replacing the sheared offset hinge pins on the Colt I was previously using...it has a RRA NM trigger, and currently a RRA 16" mid upper with a 4x32 ACOG with a bunch of rounds through it without a problem... multiple 5 shot groups with 55 grain non match ammo at 400m under 5"

The reason I was asking given 20 year old lowers seem to perform just as well as anything made today, I cannot detect any difference at all.  But I don't know anything about metallurgy.

Their lowers are / were excessively tight.  Not what I would call quality.  Even some GI mags won't drop free, never mind Pmags.

No issues with that.

There is a big issue with that.
