Noticed this part comes with the old style nut with the holes rather than the newer castle nut with notches. Does anybody know if the newer castle nuts can be used in place of the KAC nut?

I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to use a regular castle nut. The only issue you might run into is the mount portion blocking some teeth, which might make it harder to tighten the castle nut

You can, the castle nut that came with the A2 enhancements isn't flush with the rear of the end plate/sling adapter.  If you use the Vltor A5, it won't matter.
