My buddy had a barrel nut that he couldn't loosen on a Saint Edge ATC so he used a cutting wheel to cut it in half. In doing so he cut the rim of the barrel extension and cut into the barrel at the chamber. Is this barrel still useable?

Should be fine, just clean up any burs on that cut.

Tell him to use a breaker bar next time. I've found no nut too tight for properly-applied leverage.

I would have thought that with the cut being into the barrel near the chamber the barrel would be unsafe. I guess I am mistaken?

There is a huge margin of safety in that area.

A slot like that is a big stress riser, and could lead to problems.  I'd trash it - safety first.

Until someone crams a .300 Blackout round into the chamber.

If that worries you blend it out.

Not really, it could withstand even that.

If you turn a barrel down so the rear swell taper is gone and the .68 diameter goes back to the threads, the barrel could survive at least one loading of 180,000 psi chamber pressure.

Since, the case head will let go at about 125,000 psi, you'll never fail that area of the barrel.

The Greek philosopher Archimedes once said, “Give me a firm place to stand and a lever and I can move the Earth.” He was enamored of the idea of the lever and its ability to multiply force

Confidence is a thing.

I would not let someone I cared about shoot that barrel.

I would not count on that barrel to save my life or save the Republic.

Without confidence, what good is it?
