Since the  U.S. Military is transitioning to 6.8x51, is the 556 going to become a obsolete round.  Lake City is now re tooling to manufacture 6.8x51. Does this mean the ammo manufactures will not produce 556? Just trying to see if I need to ditch my 556 rifles'?

Thanks

LOL, no.

I'm not even convinced they're going to stick with the new round.

Like at all.

The 30-06 hasn't been used  by US Military since the 1950's.  Has it gone away??

The 30-40 Krag hasn't been used by the US Military since 1906.  Has it gone away??

The 45-70 hasn't been used by the US Military since the 1890's.  Has it gone away??

I think the 223 Rem / 5.56mm will be with us for decades to come. I've been shooting one since 1970.

The 5.56 x 45 rounds will be around for the next 100 years.

There will always be 5.56.

The most common centerfire round in the most common center fire rifle sold in America.

I am seeing that the AR has jumped the 10/22 but I haven't seen hard data.

6.8x51 probably isn’t going anywhere.

I hope you all are correct I like the 556. When Lake City starts producing 6.8x51 I get concerned that the civilian firearms owners will pay more for ammo, and will not have ammo available for a discontinued round. Thank you for the responses.

It’s nearing its peak, if not already. It’s far from a dead cartridge though.

6.5 Grendel and 6.8 SPC can vouch for its staying power.

The list of weird rounds that can be still be found is long.. dont overthink it.

Even if 5.56 will disappear in a couple of days there will always be the 223.

Anyway 556 is still the NATO issued round. Its not going anywhere.

All of this, plus it sounds like 5.56/M4 will remain the main option for all non-infantry even in the planned changeover… and I still believe the M5 will be a steaming pile of fail as a general issue weapon.

Time will tell.

It appears to be a new facility.

https://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2022/05/11/winchester-awarded-ngsw-ammunition-manufacturing-facility-design-contract/

Olin Winchester, who operate the US Army’s Lake City Ammunition Plant on behalf of the government, have been awarded a $15 million cost-plus contract to design a new manufacturing facility for the NGSW ammunition.
...
It was confirmed that the new facility is planned to open in 2026 and will steadily ramp production.

NATO adopted 5.56, but still has 7.62.

They didn't get rid of it.

Yes, just like 30-30 and 30-06.

.223 is the #1 rifle cartridge in the world and that's not changing any time soon with 6.great being high dolla.

My uncle makes weird faces if you say 5.56 isn’t lethal.    Apparently he used it for real

The military isn't transitioning. The Army is adopting the 6.8 round in limited roles for infantry troops.

The 5.56 will continue to be around for a long time as a primary round both for military and civilian users.

The uniformed great-grandkids of Vietnam veterans will still be issued the latest version of the M4 in 5.56.  And there will still be some Hydramatic lowers, on their 12th rebuild.

Plus with all the things going on around the world this doesn’t sound like the best moment for a weapon/ammo change…

Btw Seems like the Army is slowly responding to a request followed the GWOT experience.. but I think urban warfare will be prevalent on future battlefields… making the new caliber just too much.. just my 2cent..

It will be around for a long time. It's a well balanced round, and worth keeping.
