If I buy an HK416 upper receiver(clone) and a handguard to match, could I just use standard ar15 parts (barrel, piston, gas block, bcg, barrel) to complete the rest, or is the upper receiver strictly meant to fit only 416 and mr556 parts?

The barrel extension on the 416 is longer than the ar15, you will have to use, at the very least a barrel that has that extension.

You could build a DI 416 if you wanted, but it would probably cost you more than just buying a factory HK upper.

All mr556/416 upper parts are proprietary sans charging handle / muzzle device
