It is not a 601 upper.  It is a sleeved large hole SP1 upper that has been painted.

I think it is real.  The front lug is not tapered at the bottom and some 601 receivers appear this way.  (I'm assuming the early ones were not tapered, and later they figured out it was easy to assemble with a slight taper cut)  Other "old" looking traits are thick webbing in the back of the carry handle, crisp lines where the carrier body "tube" intersects the receiver body, and I think older receivers have funny looking tool marks where the port door rod area is cleared out.  Left side has no vertical line in the cam pin bulge body, that may have been ground off at some point.  It looks painted to me, but that might be a good price for a real 601 receiver.

I know it's been repainted so one could probably assume that the sight directional arrows could have been sanded off, and its a square forge so it's early production, but what made me think 601 at first glance was the hole under the ejection port door for the spring. I mean yes it could be an SP1 with a sleeved front lug, rear shaved sight area and a drilled hole for the ejection port door spring, but that to me seems like alot of machining work do, so if I mis Identified it I apologize, I was simply just trying to help fellow members out.
