What is your go to 300blk training ammo?

Looking for something that's a good balance of quality and cost effective (as much as it can be now-a-days anyways).

I've been using SIG 125gr, but found out recently that it's louder in my gun than other brands. Going to try out fiocchi 147gr next.

Pre-covid i was ready to buy some bulk Wolf....

Pre covid it was V-Max, the Aussie ammo that was BOGO, and I did grab some steel Wolf.

Now?  It is basically rationing what I used pre-covid, along with whatever sale I can find.   For instance, for awhile, Varmageddon was a $1.00 a round, so I would grab three or so boxes (2 mags).

It's BAAAAACKK!!!

I guess we will see if they will actually ship this time. They replaced it with Ammo Co 150gr I believe last time

The steel case Wolf and Barnaul are a bargain.Plenty accurate and feeds and cycles my guns good.I reload though so I try and by brass case stuff that I can reload. When I buy brass I like the Fiochi 150 grain fmj’s.

Whatever I load myself. Usually 150gr Hornady or 200gr Berry's for range fun. Also bought some S&B in bulk a while back, it's been fine.

300blk range fodder i've used so far:

Hornady Frontier 125gr
Defender 120gr
Selleir&Bellot 124gr

Haven't had any problems with them. Never really noticed an appreciable difference between them, but they've just been for blasting.

Sellier & Bellot was good cheap stuff for a while and then yeah.  Still cheaper than anything but the russian shit I bought when that was available. I would buy more S&B in supers and subs when it comes back to earth.  They make good AK ammo too.

I have rolled my own for years now, so I plink and hunt with the same round. Nosler 110 grain Varmageddon is where it's at for me. I compared them with the Hornady Vmax 110 grain loads, and for me anyway, the Nosler takes the cake! Although I wouldn't be afraid to use the Vmax either.

I saw that on the shelf today. The price is nice but I don't like running steel case ammo through my ARs.

110 Hornady VMAX I bought when they sold it in 200 round cases. But it is loaded kinda weak.

Found Varmagedon to be the poorest accuracy 110 factory load in my 1/7 Bartlein 300 BLK barrel.

Did you chrono the V-max?
Some folks and sites show that it is loaded hot.   I chrono'd mine it was weak as hell.   Not sure what is going on.  I also have the 200 round Hornady Black cases they used to sell.

I have some of those 200 round Black plastic ammo cans as well.  They were 55 cpr for a while.  I was hoping they would eventually settle back down to closer to that.  I don't have a chrono.

First I've heard that V-max is loaded weak.

I haven't bought any in a couple of years (200rnd plastic ammo cans), but the ones I've chrono'd netted me >2100fps out of an 8".

Nosler Varmageddon was ~2000fps, and Tac-TX ~2050.

Would like to find some 300blk blaster stuff. I was getting the fmj Remington stuff at Academy pretty regularly. It shoots really well out of my 300. And it was cheap.
Bought some SIG Premium. That stuff is really accurate. But it is really expensive when you find it.
So now I just use my handloads for the most part. Been single staging it. But I've been shooting my 300 quite a bit. So I may break down and get a caliber change kit for my Dillon 650.

My Hornady Black 110gr V-max out of the 200 round can came out incredibly slow.  I had a thread on it awhile back because I was shocked at how slow it was.

5 shot average on my 9" was 2116 fps
5 shot average on my 10.5" was 2158 fps

I did have a flood in my basement, so I wonder if maybe humidity got to it?  My ammo didn't get wet (only a few inches after the float valve on the sump-pump got stuck)....but maybe it sucked up moisture?

I had some new Wilson Combat loaded 110gr Tac-tx that ran pretty well during the same session.
5 shot average on my 9" was 2213 fps
5 shot average on my 10.5" was 2261 fps

I'm going to buy another box of Hornady Black and give it a try at some point.

I think I remember that thread. I need to dig up my numbers instead of just going by memory.

I remember the Vmax being hot compared to Tac-TX and the Varmageddon. So much so, I thought it was making the bolt overrun the magazine when rapid firing.

Yeah, my impression going in was the Hornady Black V-max ran fast, and that Barnes Tax-tx ran slow.    I was really bummed that my V-max ran so slow.

I knew that the Wilson Combat loaded Tac-Tx ran fast, which is why I chrono'd it.
I also have some Barnes Tac-tx, but I didn't chrono it, since pretty much everyone who tests it shows that it runs fairly slow.

I did. I have a Magnetospeed. I remember it was like 150-200 fps slower than 110 Barnes. REALLY slow. So much so I shot another box of 200 to see if it was a fluke and shot Barnes with it second time. Don't remember the specific velocity figures offhand. Perhaps that was why those 200 round boxes were so cheap. Someone used too little or the wrong powder? Was about 1ish MOA though. Very accurate.

Interesting,
I tested mine with a Magnetospeed as well.
Out of a brand new, never been fired 10.5":
Hornady Black 110gr V-max (200 round ammo can)  averaged 2158 fps.   (9" = 2116 fps)
Wilson Combat loaded 110gr Tac-Tx averaged 2261 fps.   (9" = 2213 fps)
Underwood loaded 115gr Controlled Chaos averaged 2198 fps. (9" = 2118 fps)
Underwood loaded 110gr Varmageddon averaged 2162
Sig 120gr HST averaged 2100 fps.  (9" = 2036 fps)
Gorilla loaded Barnes 150gr soft points averaged 1828 fps.

I will eventually grab a 20 round box of Hornady Black V-max and retest.....just to see if it makes a difference.

ETA: added 9" numbers as well

Is soft point or hollow point better for 300blk?

It's more important how does it test. So, the gist of it is: soft target: V-max 110gr, better barrier performance: TacTx 110 or 120.
