In the process of putting a build list together for an 11.5" SBR and I'm not sure what I should do for a rear sight.  I'm going with an extended quad rail and the 11.5" barrel with FSB because I've always liked the look.  I'm going to run a red dot, either EOTech or Aimpoint PRO likely, so I'm trying to figure out if I want to do a fixed for folding rear sight.  Fixed I'm looking at the DD fixed rear or the MI Combat fixed rear.  For folding, there are a lot more options, but probably MBUS Pro.  Interested to hear recommendations.

I’ve got EOTechs with folding and fixed adn as you’re set up for lower 1/3 cowitness and using the optic correctly, you shouldn’t notice either until you need them. If you might use a magnifier at some point, you will want to go with folding. For fixed rears, I use the DD and it is bombproof.

I prefer the fold down BUIS and have several Midwest Industries and one MagPul Gen 3 on my last build.   I run my E O Tech as far forward as possible on the receiver towards the muzzle to get the widest field of view.   I don’t think there is a wrong answer and just personal preference.

Thanks.  I have no plans on putting a magnifier on this gun.  The plan is for this to strictly be a defensive setup with a role to play inside 100 yards.

But you think I go the fixed route, I should use a lower 3rd cowitness mount for the optic?

It's a back-up.  Most likely to be zeroed and forgotten.  I would not go fixed on a back-up sight set.

It depends on if you want a rear sight in your FOV or not...you'll have to figure out what your preference is.

This.

Personal preference plays a major role.

I'd go folding to keep it out of my site picture for an optic.  gets deployed only if needed.

I run LMT fixed sites on my Mk18 Mod0 clone.

I always go with lower 1/3rd or taller, never absolute. And even still, I prefer to have a flip up rear. Less clutter to see, even if they fuzz out when you target focus. At least with a flip I have the option to have them in view or not.

The only fixed I run are on my Mk18 that has an EXPS on a Unity riser. You can't use them, but in a pinch I already have to remove the EOTECH. So one less thing to have to worry about manipulating

I like the Larue or DD fixed sights.

Folding rear sight, so you could throw a magnifier on there if needed.

I have used both and settled on fixed rear for my 11.5 FSB. I figured if it’s bad enough that my optic is down, then I want it in place and ready to roll. The catch is that I run my red dot on a 1.93 with QD for nods so it’s not in my sight picture at all. If the optic craps the bed I can quickly pop it off and run the gun. It works for me but you really need to try it in both configurations. As others have mentioned a lower 1/3 is more forgiving with fixed sights

Thanks everyone.  I'll probably try the flip up first and try to keep my eye out for a used fixed rear for a cheaper price than a new one.

The advantage to a fixed rear with cowitness  height optic is a crisp dot if you have astigmatism. That is the only way I would personally run a fixed rear. With a fixed rear it is always there so it better be doing something. It also blocks a magnifier as stated already so for the extra weight and limitations it needs to have some kind of utility and not just be a liability

But I run folding on everything. Front and rear. This is the 21st century. BUIS go mostly unused and getting them.out of the way and being lightweight are at the top of my priority list. I also would personally NEVER exclude a magnifier for a self defense rifle that has ANY role outside 50 yards.

My preference in a fighting rifle, if you are going the FSB route, is to have a matching rear sight.

So fixed rear to match FSB. Or if folding, both front and rear need to be folding.

On the fixed, lower 1/3 is my ideal. YMMV. DD 1.5 fixed rear are my go-to. Although LaRue, Scalarworks, and Midwest Industries also make nice ones depending on your price point.

I have a DD fixed behind a M21 optic. It surprised me how it did not get in the way and kinda vanished.

I have both setups and that's been my experience too.  I know one trainer that requires folding sights to be in the up position during class.

Defensive gun = fixed sights, lower 1/3 cowitness. It doesn't matter if an iron sight is "in your sight pictuee" with an unmagnified red dot. You'll get used to it.

ETA, if you're running a plate carrier, and helmet with nods, go for the tall mount but keep it qd with fixed irons

If you decide to go the fixed route, check out the Scalarworks sight.  It is the finest fixed rear back-up iron sight currently on the market.

Get a good primary RDS and folding rear to keep the picture clean
