Not sure if you see too many of these in the US due to the import restrictions on Chinese hardware??

Here are a couple picks of my 1964 early 3 digit serial # SP1 and an Armalite/Colt waffle mag.

The bayonet is marked: Colt Made in W. Germany.  If anyone knows what the time period was for that, I'd appreciate knowing the history.

I want to put somet kind of display together along with my bando of TW-73 ammo, but I don't know how I'd secure it outside of the safe.

New to the party here.  I was out looking for an AR and walked into one of the local shops and bought your gun apparently :)  Bushy with the A1 upper and an identical set up.  Brand new.  Don't see em on their site or in the catalog that came with.

Considered myself lucky.  Back in college in 79-80 I had a Colt SP-1 but sold it when I got married.  Regretted it ever since.  Always like the early look with the A1 upper etc.  When I got back into ARs I got a Bushmaster A2 with the heavy barrel.  Didn't like it as it felt so much bulkier then I remembered the SP1.  Sold it.  Ended up with a DPMS Panther lite post ban.  Liked the  feel, but it still didn't look quite right. Gave it to my son.

On a whim went looking and came home with one looking just like yours.  Feels great.  Can't wait to get out and shoot it.

My Colt "Match Target (TM) Match HBAR".  Do you think Colt likes the word "Match"? I bet it would be a MATCH Colt MATCH Target (TM) MATCH HBAR MATCH MATCH MATCH freakin' MATCH if there was room on the mag well.  I have visions of the Colt boardroom... "Maybe if we say MATCH enough the AWB crowd will think this is a harmless target rifle and we can keep selling them..." h
The bayo is by Bauer Ordnance Corporation.  A1 upper from CDNN.  Lower, charging handle, and receiver tube were all black and I Duracoated them "Colt Gray". The early Colt Gray from Norrell's would have been an exact match (hindsight being 20/20) but the difference doesn't bother me enough to recoat the lower.

Thanks to Bob ([email protected]) for the groovy 1970 vintage sling.
Thanks to Noah Zark for the outstanding mottled A1 buttstock.
Thanks to MVician for the beautiful mottled A1 pistol grip.

All of these sellers treated me like family and I'm pleased to have done business with all of them.  he
I have a new Hakko "Colt style" 4x carry handle scope in the safe, not mounted yet as I have yet to put any downrange with her.  It has the same profile as a Colt scope and Hakko is the OEM, so it fits "the spirit of retro" IMHO... but I'm enjoying just looking at this rifle as is for now.

Thanks to the Retro forum at large for the inspiration, sharing your collective knowledge, and helping me appreciate the "simpler" (not) things in life!

Please excuse my crappy photography skills and my Kodak Brownie digital camera:

I'm looking to build an XM177E2 clone. I have an A1 upper receiver and I recall someone making new production metal buttstocks. I know the clone needs CAR length single heat shield handguards and a 2 position buffer tube. I am still fuzzy on a few points though.

Did the original XM177 have the non stakeable 3 hole lock ring on the buttstock or did it have the notched and stakeable one? What was the original barrel length of the XM177 E2? The E2 suppressor? Can I pin an E2 suppressor on a correct length barrel and get 16" out of it? What type of handguard retention ring was used, straight or delta ring? Finally, were chrome bolts and carriers used or parkerized?

Good Ole Electrical tape; made sure it was wrapped up tight; just did it yesterday, so it is still tight; it hasn't been outside yet, so I'll see how it holds up. I could use duck tape, but I hate the residue it leaves behind; you see the stock and you can tell it had duck tape on it at one point in time.

heres a pic of mine ive finnaly started to rework. ive had this for about 6 years. its a an eagle arms and am sending it off this week to get refinished in colt grey-green. i decided not to remove the extra material in the rear and front so not to weaken it as i use it fairly rough in the field quiet often. ive got a slab side upper and bolt ready to go as soon as it gets back from being finnished

WOO-HOO! PAGE 10!

OK, I finished my build; here it is:

I took it to the range and even though I haven't shot an A1 in a long time (since they replaced them with A2 rifles in my USAR Unit); but when I shot it, it took me back to my Basic Training days. Ah, the fond memories (except, not Drill Sergeant was yelling at me this time ).

I just finished my A1 retro build using a CDNN upper and a PWA lower that I've had for 20+ years. I tried to match the Duracoat color based on the color samples in their catalog. I wish I had chosen the next lighter gray. Their Colt Gray is much too dark for these later uppers. This is "Steath Gray" which does match the parkerized steel parts, but is a little too dark to match the upper. I should have gone with either "Combat Gray" or "Grey Wolf" to be closer.

I'm still happy with it. I saw plenty of rifles when I was in the Army (1979-1992) who's color did not match.

Colt Model 723/727-ish - kind of 1990-ish, before the Picattiny rail madness of today. it might fit on the KISS department, but scratches at the Retro level.

The USGI slings are designed to be used as a target shooting style sling, not just a carry strap. With the hook in the rear, you can detach it from the buttstock and put your arm through the loop made by the slider. Tighten it down above your bicep, and you have a very solid sling. It's slow to get into, so it's mostly seen in Highpower competition.

ETA:

Untrue, you can create, put on and be ready to shoot with a loop sling in under 30 seconds. Although, thanks for posting how to make a loop sling, thats something that slipped my mind since my MCRD days.

Nice rifle, and great pics too.  The real sling really rounds it out.  Looks like we got identical twins:

There apears to be at least two different old time bolt stops.  One I have would not fit a modern lower, had to file on it, eeek.

It was that pic that inspired me to go "brown".......a big thanks to UXB for those handguards..

The catch I have is going to take a good deal of filing as well.....I really hate "working" on vintage parts like that!

The 2 waffle mags in the 1st pic are the ones I picked up off the FALfiles a few weeks ago......both were really nice....much more blueing than they really show in the pic.
