I got into these by spending hours looking at Vietnam combat photos in High school on the library computer , and i noticed the Vietnam era lower receiver details were different than the "A2"  and  i was frustrated that no one offered a XM16 style lower receiver for sale - so i "made my own". I have several more "retro" rifles in the works and i will post photos of them when they are completed.
Here are 3 of mine:

The A1 clone I had built for my step-father:

Colt upper and furniture, RRA "US Property" marked lower, Armalite bolt, carrier, and lower parts.

(Sorry for the pic quality)

Machine : all 3 were done up in Norrells 'flat grey' early colt M16 finish - the color difference is from oil on the resin , you can darken the finish by applying more thin airbrush coats

That's just the Retro ones...and then I need to get proper lowers for the others and get tax stamps for the new lowers.

Perhaps this retro lower build will come to fruition (I know we've all had our hopes up before, but be sure to sound off in this thread):

"Retro lower, which do you want?"

With this build I was trying to replicate a late 80’s / early 90’s CAR.

Something along these lines.

Here's my build in progress. I'm still at the collecting parts phase. I'm going for the 609/610 look with a partial fence and SBR. The purists will hate me but I'm thinking of going with a 6.8mm instead of 5.56. Just a little more kick with the short barrel.

Bushmaster aluminum CAR butt stock and FS
80% lower for test fitting with crappy A1 mods
Lebanese contract Colt A1 upper receiver.
A1 pistol grip

Not really a true 'Retro' but definitely built with the 'Retro' look in mind.

I ordered a kit sans lower from Delton, and all the parts sans lower from Bushmaster, and so far, this is it.

Aint much to look at yet.  The Delton kit will be green (it's the stuff you don't see next to the bottom lower), and it's hard to tell from my crappy camera's photos, but the uppers I ordered are 'A1' (sorta-they have the deflectors).  Both companies have the 20" barrel backordered .  So here I sit, with what you see here (and another lower waiting parts in transit for a railed m4 setup.)  Hopefully the wait won't be much longer.

I am sooo broke.  Here is my virtual plate:

Please allow me to pass it around cyberspace-cuz that's where my money has been going!

These have been waiting for A1 lowers since Colt653 got us all excited.
Now somebody else is rattlin' the cage about A1 lowers. Is it gonna happen?

653 & M16A1 clones

Thanks.....Chad

I know in-progress pics aren't the best, but here's what I've got so far...
and I figured my nice, retro countertop was fitting!

FrankenRetro

GTS lower (SAFE,SEMI marked)
Ekie reject XM16E1 upper
El cheapo Aluminum Stock (that's gonna be a project unto itself!)
Freebie M16 grip(flecked pattern- painter over like a dummy by me)
Handguards traded for my M4 ones
Used, thoroughly WECSOGed Bushie moderator

All the stuff that makes it actually shoot?
well, I'm workin' on it...

How many of these are actually Retros and not repro-Retros (as in modern builds, reproductions)?

There is a seperate picture thread for real retros, I think this is more for both. Mine is a repro.

Kitchen is retro, wife is into that.  Everything in the picture is period correct and original, save the little white boot things on the chair legs, the floor, and the SP1 lower & fire control parts.

Some good ones I've stumbled across in the past.

From what appears to be a hood on the FSB I've debated whether or not this is a 655 special high profile

Australian SASR (note M16s with XM148 and XM203, at least judging from the handgaurd, and what appears to be a sawn-off barrel on one of the guns)

Also SASR

I have a source in the UK that sells identical tiger-stripe covers for A1 furniture ......

Oh........Ekie......the 601 replica rocks.......very nicely done.
To do one as accurately as yours is not an easy thing.....

Thanks, got all the correct parts on it now, save I am not happy with the condition of the handguards, and am still looking for a 601 windage drum.  Seems the windage drum is harder to find then a 1/14 twist barrel.  Will eventually get it on a early SP1 lower with the pinned on receiver extension and the raised + on the side.

Really like your AR-10, will get me one of those, some day.  This rifle is getting me by for now:

Am considering getting an SR-25 and modifying the AR-10B upper to fit it, then could use those waffle mags I have stashed away.
