Most of the early "AR15-A2 Sporter II" rifles had 1:7 barrels, A2 handguards, stocks and pistol grips, field sight uppers, slick and slab. Basically a year or or more of early R6500 production.

That was my first AR, back around 1985 IIRC.

Aren’t there some pics floating around of an AR rifle with round handguards from the 1960’s?

Edit. Just found it. Shooting Times Magazine, October 1966. A photograph of an M16 with an "A2" hand guard.

The original AR15 prototypes were round handguards.

Yes, i forget the model number, but i bought one in 1989, it was used but a transition gun with a2 barrel with round handguards, a1 upper  with no F/A , it was a factory gun, wish i still had it, shot goodI i think the book black rifle covers that transition period, as Colt used up old parts when going to A2 rifle. I think r6500, .... as the others have posted...

Fairly common setup on some Sporter rifles.. especially the 222 were assembled with leftover parts

That video was well worth the extended run time.
Now I want a C7.
