I have an A2 clone and just bought an A1 clone. They’re not perfect clones and I don’t need perfection to every detail. But wanted to update the sling I’m using on the A2 and put one on the A1.

Anyone have a recommendation (new not vintage)? My assumption is that an OD USGI M1 type cotton sling would work, but I’ve also seen that those were not used on M16s past the late 1960s.

Anyone have a recommendation?

Hell we still had od green cotton slings in the teens. But as for your question one of them or the nylon version of them for your a1 would be fine.

Cotton or Nylon M1 slings. Either would be correct, they were issued concurrently in the late ‘60’s.

We had the black nylon slings on our A1's in the early/mid 80's.

In the 1980s we had black nylon slings on both our M16A1s and A2s.

Anyone have a specific sling they recommended that fits the bill?

Anyone have a good source for these? I need a few for some PSA builds.  The last batch I got were made in the 60’s by the School For The Blind
In New York. I can’t remember who I bought them from. They were new old stock.

The M16A1 I had in ARNG in the late 1980's - early 1990's had a green nylon "seatbelt" sling.

The M16A2 I was issued while at Ft Leonard Wood Engineer School in 1990 had the black nylon weave "silent" sling.

Those are new made repro. Pretty decent repro, but a repro nonetheless. Fair deal IMO.

Yup, that’s exactly what I wanted. Wasn’t interested in vintage or original that’s been in a warehouse for 50 years. ??

All the ones we had in 70-71 were the nylon 'seatbelt' slings.  example from flea bey attached for reference.

I found a few of these M1 Garand Slings in a box of stuff I have. Mfr Date is 06/2016.  NSN is 1005-01-083-8113.  These numbers may help if searching for better deals.
I also found 2 wider slings that had paracord at each end.  Thinking these were improvised slings.
Now, with all that said, does the clip end of the sling go on the buttstock or the sling attachment at the front sight post?

Thank you for that, I was thinking that would be the way it went but had second thoughts when I remembered carbines. Think I'll snap one of these on my 605 clone,

If you have a CMP account you can get a new cotton sling here:

My active duty span included the transition form M16A1 to M16A2.  I wouldn't say there was any specific "correct" sling throughout.  The OD cotton and OD nylon were present and common throughout.  The black "silent" slings showed up very late in that span, so I would associate them with the A2 only.
