Looking to complete the last bit for an early 90's type carbine, have the AP5000, just can't seem to find the correct type of mount. Seems like they're all pic type rails. We're they some weird stanag, or was it weaver?

Thanks!

I think that the original issue M4s that we got when I was in 5th Group had picatinny rails on the top, but that was about the same time that I was injured and put out medically so I’m not positive.

Just thought that I’d chime in to keep it at the top of the pile. Now I’m curious

Thanks, that is interesting. I might have to go that route anyhow and knowing that helps.

Makes me wonder what they were using before the invention of the pic rail. ...hmmmm

Larry Vickers' Delta Force Colt 723 Carbine

At 12:19 ish the Lav shows the optic/mount. That's def not a pic mount. But still looks weird to me. Doesn't seem all that Weaver either. hmmm

I think that’s the same interview where he went on to say that the armorers would cut off the carrying handle, machine it flat and add a rail, post 723 Desert Storm. I think that I have that right. I know that in an interview somewhere Larry made that mention. It may not be this interview.

It was an early ARMS mount. Yes it was weaver style, with screw holes for STANAG scopes.
Was marked “M16A1/M16A2”

You can find visually identical repel mounts sold under the name UltraLux, and a few other brands.

I seem to recall LAV saying milling the top carry handle off and adding a rail caused problems by weakening the receiver.

Unfortunately I think the closest thing you'll get now is the Smith Enterprise carry handle pic rail mount and Leupold PRW2 30mm low rings. Those look the closest to the old Aimpoint rings. https://www.leupold.com/prw2-30mm-medium-matte

The A.R.M.S #16 mount would work on a CompM to Aimpoint PRO, but I don't know how it would work with the 5000.

Thanks all, quite interesting for sure.

After some quick goog'n, looks like I'll likely have to get a Smith for now until I run across a Colt/Arms weaver style one.

My barrel assy dates to 1993 iirc. So I wouldn't be wholly wrong for using a pic rail version. Thanks!

That specific mount is made by Maryland Gun Works (MGW) according to this older thread:

I just picked one up on Tacswap. I probably cant link to it but just search carry handle optic mount. No affliliation with the seller.

Now to track down an Aimpoint 2000...

Thanks for the hint, I'll get it ordered come payday.

Fortunately I found a great condition 5000 many moons ago, but the mount I had didn't fit the carry handle oddly enough. So just circling back to complete the project after a few years.

be aware most top rails dont hold zero or crush inwards or scoot sideways. get a mil spec like above or have one made or modified there are 30 plus aftermkt varieties over the years it seems. some solid types can be made better than mil spec by sitting lower if milled properly.

the correct aimpoint low ring that came later is called an sro mount. not sure what year it was introduced but its out of production and i had to buy an optic on ebay to get one.

side note if you start collecting each version of later aimpoints like i did lately there is also an m68 gooseneck mount for comp series and some have the rare late c clamp reinforcements. i like those over the top rail for actual use.  with the standard aimpoint QRP mount its perfect sight picture far above lower 1/3rd co witness. perfect perefial vision also. my favorite.

Really appreciate that insight! May well be better that I get one and have it milled. Braceman or Adco might be able to make it all work.

And I do have the early Comp that came after the 5000. Well used, with rack numbers, and a tiny bit of moon dust still on it. I currently have that on a CQBR. But damned this disease.

So I got the one from one of the aformentioned sites. I don't really care for it as it seems to have a bit of wobble. It certainly looks the part though. I did find that I have a ARMS nsn'd rail one. It fits really well and is much more solid. Now to find better rings. I'll post a few pics in a bit, because this thread needs pic's.

The original is an A.R.M.S  #2 mount. They’re still available - in stock at Brownells and still marked “M16A1/M16A2.

The older ones had fewer cuts like a weaver rail. The new ones are picatinny of course, but functionally pretty much the same.

I have an old one that’s marked “Colt” from back in the day. I used it with a Swarovski C2 cobra 1.5x14 (circle/dot reticle like AUG).  That was really hot stuff until the Aimpoints came on.  It’s still quite effective and fairly bombproof.

Thanks! I have the #02 in pic rail form. It's super solid, especially as compared to this. Not sure of appropriate rings though. They appear about the same as the ones in LAV's vid above. So may just rock those.
