Yup.  A 1:8" twist is fine for M855A1 at normal temperatures.

As we all know the 855 is a 62 grain bullet.

As you apparently don't know, gyroscopic stability is based on bullet length, not bullet weight.

Nonetheless, that 1/7.75 Krieger barrel was stellar with heavy bullets.

Which has nothing to do with M855A1.

Got my socom barrel from arms unlimited. Pinned a asr flash hider on it. Very happy with the way it shoots. Seldom gets shot without a can.

Stripped Socom's are hard to find, do the FSB versions shoot just as well if free floated?

I would think so. I debated about cutting the sight and free floating this one but decided not.

Did you buy it recently?  I've been checking armsunlimited for the past 2-3 months as they have the best price I could find, but they've been showing "out of stock"

For my money, the Colt SOCOM profile M4 barrel is the best general purpose AR barrel on the market.

Probably close to two years ago. They had a sale and I think it was $225 or so?
I wanted something short so I replaced a 20” gov profile barrel that I had cut to18”.

The first SOCOM barrel tested for this article was free-floated with the FSB remaining in place.  The 2nd SOCOM barrel tested for this article originally had a front sight base, but I removed it when I free-floated the barrel.

Colt doesn't, but Centurion recently came out with one.

I recently put together another rifle with a Colt SOCOM barrel. This one is wearing a Nightforce NX8 in their excellent new Ultramount, 1.93 height. Honestly, the mount height revolutionized this optic for me. Previously I had it in a 1.54 high Reptilia mount with a piggyback RMR because even on 1X the NX8 felt slow. Now with this mount, the 1X is blazing fast and the 8X is much more forgiving. Some have expressed concern about higher mounts creating sacrifices in precision, but I did not find that to be the case.

10 shot group at 100yds using 75gr Hornady Match. I pulled one round, but with that one eliminated, the group is quite satisfactory.

Good report.  I have one of these barrels NIB waiting on me to build another upper.  I just built an upper with the relatively rare Daniel Defense SOCOM profile 14.5 CHF barrel, it shoots on par with Colt SOCOM barrels which I'm thrilled about.

I've been waffling on the NX8 1-8 vs Vortex Razor 1-10.  Do you have a hard time shooting prone with a mount that tall?  I usually run 1.54"ish height, but was thinking about trying 1.7" high Badger this time around.

I do very little shooting from the prone, but tried it this morning just to check. If one spends most of his time laying behind a rifle, the lower mount would probably be better, but this was still very doable and I still have a solid cheekweld with no neck cramping. Just not laying "on" the rifle as much. For my uses, though, the taller mount definitely wins.

I purchased a Colt SoCom barrel recently.
It came in a bag within a box labled Colt.
No wick.
Did come with a standard front sling swivel installed.
Does not have a date stamp.
Has the typical cage code stamping.
Has the 0 stamp.
Has an "I" or "1" or a dash stamped opposing 0 stamp.

Pinned/welded extended a2.  I stuck this on a 604 style upper and a newer colt carbine lower

I have one like that, IIRC, came in that same box (still have the box somewhere), had John Thomas pin and weld an extended A2 FS.

The FSB Colt SOCOM 14.5 is the best shooting AR barrel (overall) that I've used, and I've been doing this AR thing since 1984.

I have a few of them, and they are all excellent shooters.  I think there is a gilded edge in the Colt, but I may have brand bias and because I do not scientifically test like MOLON.

This is a Rem Defense AFP complete factory upper with a Phantom P/W.  It shoots at least as well as every other AR I own apart from my Colt SOCOM.

I set this one up as a hard use trainer, and haven't had any issues yet.  It gets used in drills, etc without any discernible accuracy degradation yet.

NOTE: that picture was taken the day I painted it.  It doesn't look as pretty now

Again, I'm just a guy that sends a lot of rounds down range.  MOLON would be the guy to prove / disprove their capabilities.
