How common was this? I know a guy who bought his Colt in the 80s. It has no fence around the magwell and it doesn’t have the takedown pin retainer spring.

Very common for ‘80’s models to have old SP1 type slab side lowers.

You are describing my first AR.
A2 upper on a SP1 lower.
Large hole pivot screw. Semi auto bolt carrier.
I believe the model was 6550 or 6551.
They were plentiful, IIRC

My slab side Competition Match Hbar, this one is sear blocked and primarily used as my guest match rifle, an elegant retro AR.

Very Common- Colt had thousands of upper and lower forgings from the early Model 601. These forgings became obsolete when the US military went to the forward assist and the non-removable front pivot pin.  Colt never throws out parts. The forgings were used up in the building of the Sporter series of rifles.

Slab side lowers were on just about every Colt Civilian rifle from the 60s to the early 90s.
