Hey guys. I have found v50 for M855 (607 m/s) and M80 (585 m/s) over at research gate. But I have trouble finding data on the newer A1 versions.

Can you guys help me out? Thanks

well for starters it's not commercially available AFAIK

I shot some M855A1 over a chrono some years ago:

https://www.ar15.com/forums/AR-15/200yd-Groups-Velocities-of-Winchester-62OT-mk318-64-GD-and-others-/16-744061/?page=1&anc=bottom#bottom

Now that was a 20" Colt HBAR brand barrel and the Chrono was approximately 15 feet from the muzzle.

Nice, seems to be on par with specs :)

I'm doing a military simulator and v50 is a good measurement for the rounds terminal ballistics properties against steel barriers. I can also use tensile strength to calibrate it to mild steel etc.

V50 against what?

- mild steel?
- RHA
- ballistic nylon?

And how thick is the target?

I ASSUME he was asking for velocities at 50meters........
So some sort of velocities for the M855A1 and M80A1............

V50 means the velocity at which a round will penetrate something (usually armor) 50% of the time. It doesn't mean anything unless you know what it's penetrating and at what distance

as far as I'm aware anything public describes it's performance over it's predecessors as "Enhanced"

The classified DOT&E lethality report provides a detailed
description of the M80A1's performance.

This article says M855A1 will go through mild steel at over double the distance as M855:

My intial post was missing info, it was a 6.35mm A36 steel sheet they shot at. v50 does tell that its safe to assume that M855 in this case can penetrate that barrier at that given velocity. Sure I dont know how much velocity is left after exiting it. But since 50% of them dont get through it cant be much. Its the best data I have found on for steel barriers.

Its easier with wood were I can get pretty accurate readings how far it will penetrate

We meet everywhere Matt :D (I'm Anders)

Thats good info I can use ballistics calculator to get the velocity at double the distance

I've never done V50, but I have chronoed it out of a 14.5" barrel and I got 2975, at 4200ASL, 29.94 BARO, and 55*f.

Here us a little video showing what I am doing

So this is the Curve im working with right now.

Using Buffman range data that M80A1 has v50 at double the distance I get this curve after I set the maximum penetration to 10mm (mild steel) I derived maximum penetration data from the linear maximum penetration of v50 at muzzle velocity (15mm).
Also calibrated lower range using M80 data for 24 gauge mild steel and calibrated it for the more potent EPR round.

Looking at this curve it means the M80A1 round can penetrate about 5 shipping containers (each wall is 14 gauge mild steel, 2mm in the curve which means 10 walls). Does that sound about right? I havent added any tumbling. Because I dont have any data point from real life for this.
