I’m looking at buffer tubes for carbines I’m building my boys   I am wondering, is there really an advantage going with 7075 over 6061?

For the price go 7075. LMT tubes with dry film lube is all I use.

Advantage, no, not really. 7075 is a stronger metal and a little pricier than 6061. 6061 is plenty strong for a buffer tube, but given the mariginal price difference, if any, most will recommend 7075. Why not go for the stronger if not much of a price difference.

My concern is mortaring the buttstock to clear a malfunction. Beyond that, it probably doesn’t matter

Then go 7075 and don't worry about it. If you're really concerned, the V7 Heavy Duty is probably the strongest, but you better have a strong wallet as well.

Use a 7075 buttstock... it’s like 87 cents more expensive and WAY stronger.
No brainer.

I think all of PSA’s receiver extensions are even 7075

The price difference is negligible, go 7075.

Then things have changed for the better.
I assumed they all were 7075, when they sent me some 6061 tubes that looked like they had been bored with a wood auger bit from the Civil War.

I try to look for 7075 specific REs now (no making assumptions), they all seem to be good parts.  BCM, DD, Stag, and CMMG have been great for REs.
