Hi all,
For some reason whenever I click links to old threads it just brings me back to the forum home page. So I apologize that this topic has been beaten to death. I have also read the FAQ and it hasn't been overly informative.
I am building an aero M5 lower. I have came very close to getting the aero buffer tube just for simplicity but because I am building the gun from scratch I'd like to take advantage of customizing anything that is going to help build a reliable rifle and can help me lower recoil (I will be using an adjustable gas block)
First and foremost is there any advantage to the rifle length buffer kits over the carbine size?
Is there a specific weight I should stick to?
Does the geissele buffer kit work on the m5 lower? It seems like everything they make is very 5.56 specific.
Is it worth buying a separate tube, spring, and buffer?

FYI... currently the archives are being reloaded... because of the godaddy server issue.
Large Frame AR wise...
I use Tubbs .308 Flatwire recoil springs in all my various .308 / 6.5CM recoil / stock setups, various barrel lengths , various gas system lengths.... I have been completely happy with the 308 Tubbs flatwire recoil springs. I tried a Armalite recoil spring as well... no complaints, but the Tubbs 308 Flatwire works in everything so I stayed with those.
I also tried the various Sprinco springs... but felt like they were "to strong" and they do measure stronger rates.
If you decided on a rifle length buffer system on your M5...Standard AR15 rifle length buffer tube... you can get 308 rifle length buffers ( 5.2ish " ) up to 9.3oz -10oz. At the bench I don't notice the heavy buffer , but while standing a buffer that heavy can cause some muzzle dip.especially if you add a heavy recoil spring weight..... so YMMV.
"Carbine" buffer setups... there are 2 dominate "patterns". The buffer lengths and buffer tubes, along with some of the recoil springs... DO NOT interchange , trying to do so will just cause grief... and possible damage.
DPMS Pattern...
Uses a regular AR15 carbine buffer tube... with a .308 specific 2.5" buffer.. buffer weights can vary quite a bit.
IE.. The Aero kit comes with a 3.8oz buffer weight, but KAK sells a 5.3oz 2.5" buffer that is fully compatible.
Since you are going to use a Adj. GB ... you can decide which buffer weight you prefer.
Armalite Pattern....
Uses a Vltor / Armalite length buffer tube ( approx. 3/4" longer then the above buffer tube ) that added length allows the use of 3.25" AR15 carbine buffers. 3.25" buffers can be had in a ton of different weights.
When tuning your Large Frame... a lot of it is dependent on your gas port size... so your choice of a Adj. GB helps a lot.
And as mentioned Large Frame Ar's can be fussy... so you will most likely tune as you go.
Is any one Pattern better then the other.... completely debatable... and as mentioned.. YMMV
