I don't know how the manufacturers do it but I cerakote them in graphite black all the time.

Probably black oxide, since stainless doesn’t take parkerizing.
[edit] If you’re asking about Duramag specifically, they call it “T-360 coating” which could be their name for anything. |

Caswell is selling a chemsitry called Caswell 370 that does blackening of stainless steel.
