Howdy,

I'm learning about the AR15 platform. What are the best 2 or 3 basic AR15/M4 rifles in terms of quality. Not options/features. I'm interested in the 16" and 18" barrel models, so the 14.5" and 20" barrel models are out.

I forgot to mention this is for the 5.56/.223 caliber.

There is a sticky type thread where the manufacturers are discussed, but it is from 2009.

Happy Shooting.

Colt, LMT and Daniel Defense.

I wanted to say BCM, Sionics and KAC too, but you asked for no more than three and basic with no frills... Which kind of excludes KAC.

Never have owned an LMT. I am sure they are nice. My two ARs are both "no frills" types, and one is a BCM Mod 0 14.5" carbine that is pinned and welded, and the second is a standard Colt 6920. If I had to keep only one of the two, it would be the BCM.

The three best AR-15s are:

  • Buy a used, mid-grade AR-15 and 1,000 rounds of Federal M193

  • Get training

  • Get more training

I actually got rid of a Colt a while back, yet would never get rid of my 2 BCM’s (14.5” SOCOM and 11.5”).

You're not gonna beat a Colt for the money. A lot of the quality manufacturers sell basic carbines that mimic a run of the mill 6920.
1 Colt
2 would be LMT
3 would be BCM, Centurion, DD, Noveske, KAC etc

3 is where you have options to go from a basic quality carbine to something that is more like a basic quality gun that already comes with stuff that a lot of people are gonna do eventually anyway. If you want the ultimate evolution of a high quality AR, it's gonna be KAC.
