Received my BRN-180s upper yesterday. I was expecting everything to be as advertised in the Brownells youtube video. Specifically, in the video at 3:09, they say that it has a "Nickle Teflon" bolt, and you can see the bolt in the video is definitely nickle or chrome, but not standard black.

However upon disassembly for initial inspection, I noticed that my bolt was black which didn't match what I was expecting. Went back to the Brownells webpage and found that the description says the bolt is "matte black oxide" finish.

Anyone know when this change occurred, or why?

I do not know when the change happened, but my BRN-180 has the nickle bolt. All 3 I've had came with the nickel bolt. They were pretty early in production though.

My latest BRN180 is a 0719 prefix serial number

Mine has the nickle coated bolt.

The mine was black matte too, as was the replacement.  I was expecting the nickel bolt too.

So why couldn't they have gone with nitride? Black oxide is a cheap finish that isn't durable at all. I still love my brn180s, but for the price, come on...

I'm almost certain it's not black oxide. If it was, you could probably get a pick to remove the finish. If it is black oxide, they fucked up. Literally the only company in history to black oxide a bolt.

I think it's black nitride and the website is wrong. I would ask Brownells to clarify.

Maybe PWS uses black oxide in their budget line, but the brn180 upper by itself is now 850. I'm almost certain a regular pws gun will be qpq as evidenced by this https://palmettostatearmory.com/pws-direct-impingement-bolt-carrier-ar15-m4-pattern-rifles-1dibcra1.html

Hopefully brownells can give the consumer a better finish than a cheap black oxide in the future.

The BRN-180 Bolts are Black Oxide.  This is the same finish that PWS (mfg of the BRN-180) applies to their bolts.

@brownells

What coating is the carrier?

It's interesting because I have a PWS MK116 Mod 2 upper that's FNC Lifecoat (nickel/nitride)

The carrier is black oxide.  It was determined (by PWS) that nitriding would inadvertently effect the heat treat of the carrier.  This is particularly important given the thin area below the cam pin.  If not heat treated properly, that area would not hold up, especially if made brittle by nitriding.

@Brownells Thanks for the heads up. Any ideas why it wasn't just sent to be DLC'd or Chromed after heat treat to still increase strength , corrosion resistance, and lubricity, but remove the possibility of brittleness?

Maybe you can pass this on, but some sort of better coating other than black oxide would be appreciated. I'm not sure what sig used on my 556R gen 2, maybe some sort of dlc, or np3. It has held up fantastic. At a 500-600 dollar price point for the upper I would give the black oxide a pass. At 800-850 it's kind of point of contention. I'm shooting my brn180 gen 2 upper for the first time this weekend. If this upper shoots under a minute than please disregard the request for a better finish. Thanks again for your participation in this thread.

I was able to get two 5 shot groups about .8 at 100 yards with nothing special 55gr 223. I'm glad these brn180's have quality barrels. I look forward to using some of my match ammo in the brn180 on the next range visit. I guess the black oxide doesn't bother me as much anymore.

Hard chrome does not do you any favors when it comes to fatigue life of highly stressed components.  There is also the risk of hydrogen embrittlement, so it must be baked shortly after plating in order to drive nascent hydrogen out of the part.

What kind of bolt life can we expect from these?

The upper I just got earlier this year has a Nickel bolt. I was actually expecting a black one after reading this. Finish is holding up fine.

@brownells I'm so confused. You guys said the bolt is Black Oxide but the website says your bolt is Black Nitride. Can you clarify?

I'm back ordering one today. What kind of time frame do you think it might be on the 10.5 5.56 before shipment?
