I had forgotten about this thread.  Very informative.  I think I made a PDF of your testing.  Thanks for doing the work on this.

Thanks for bringing it back to the top and offering to update!

My memory fails me, but I don't think the Army has bought M193 for almost 10 years now.

The Army (as DOD buyer) did not order any M193 nor M855 for its 2021 purchases (starting this past 1 October):

You’ll probably appreciate this.  Using the Prvi M193 ammunition, I did an accuracy comparison firing the 55 grain FMJ load from both a 1:9” twist Colt HBAR and a 1:7” twist Colt HBAR.  Four 10-shot groups were fired from each barrel from a bench-rest at a distance of 100 yards.  The groups from each barrel were over-layed to form 40-shot composite groups.  The mean radii of the composite groups were nearly identical.

I can relate to this. I had a Colt HBAR back in the late 1980s.  I could routinely shoot the tops off of 2L bottles at 100 yards, sometimes 200 yards with just off the shelf 55 grain fmj (I assume M193, I was a noob back then).  It had a 1:7 twist chrome lined barrel. A guy I worked with shot at camp perry regularly, I told him about the accuracy of my hbar and he said no way a chrome lined barrel could shoot under 3 moa in his opinion.  I put several thousand rounds through that rifle. Sadly, I sold it towards the end of the clinton AWB, more than doubled my money. After the ban ended I bought another HBAR, but not a Colt. It has a match grade stainless heavy barrel with wylde chamber and 1:8 twist (couldn’t get one with 1:7). Anyway, it shoots good, but that old Colt HBAR shot better, chrome lining and all.

I wonder if the new FN barrels are as good as the old Colt barrels?  Anyone done any testing?

Huzzah!

I am curious about how a corporate “put out whatever we can complete” mentality has impacted the accuracy of old familiar loads.  And their reliability and safety.  ‘Cause I don’t trust suits who don’t actually “do” the work to understand how short cuts impact the outcome of the work.  (My own work experience in my industry is a major reason for that attitude…)

I've typically had my bad ammo experiences buying just after an ammo panic when manufacturers ramped up production. Hiring on new temp workers, running double shifts, combined with corporate lowering standards to get as much product out the door to feed the feeding frenzy adds up to increased likelihood of getting shit ammo.

M855 was last bought CONUS in FY19 for delivery in FY20. It was for overseas operations (OEF), FY20 had M855A1 and linked M855.  It was for overseas operations (OEF) and M855A1 was replacing m855 in the War Reserve materials on a one for one.  In my workup for this 2021 Deployment I qualified with M855A1 with a TA01NSN and got on ground and was issued M855 headstamp is 2013.

Dept of State has a Tendor for M855 for use at embassies right now that ends in 2023.

M193 is being bought for training rounds by some DHS and Legislative LE agencies on the federal level but most are buying 55/62 grain HP that matches their duty round or just duty rounds.

There are four FMS deals for M855 and Linked M855 and M193.

I am running a lot of the FMS paperwork in theater right now until I redeploy.
