I have an NX8 1-8x24 inbound.  It is going on my Colt 6920.  My goal is for this to be a do all, SHTF rifle that I can grab and use for a variety of purposes.  I have a can I will run on it sometimes.  I plan to set it up for XM193 or my somewhat better handload equivalent.  Should I zero at 50 yards?  100?

What are the cool kids doing?

Its not a BDC reticle so you can use whatever zero you want.

I used what was available to me at the time of zero. Using my local range I zeroed at 96 yards (thats was the distance from muzzle to target on my rangefinder).

I later used hornady’s free ballistic calculator to get an idea of mil holds for my particular barrel and ammo. Worked decent so I haven’t felt the need to change my zero yet

Looks to be set up for 100 meter zero with that reticle and the turrets.

It’s not setup for any zero.  The reticle is mils or moa and so are the turrets.

I have a lot of time on NX8s.

I like ‘em zeroed at 200 and just hold over for 300 that’s about as far as I’ve taken one.

The reticle at 8X is pretty coarse to dial and use the center but there’s no wind holds so holding over can be a bitch. The turret/reticle on the NX8 makes absolutely no sense at all.

It’s a good 1-6200 yard optic that be cranked up to 8X for scouting/ID use.

You are FAR more ambitious than I!

A lot of people with 1.5moa guns complain about the 1.25moa dot in that scope. Just zero for the top of the post, or use holds, IMO

One guy recently claimed he had a group of either military or police with NX8s that couldn’t even obtain zero due to the dot size. I have never had trouble shooting sub MOA with it on several occasions with non-match ARs

I do think the reticle is for shooting people though, not prairie dogs.

Last two times zeroing with the dot:

I used a 100y zero and I’ve tested it out to 250y so far.

Very happy with this setup.

The reticle is a mess.  It’s easy to zero on a B8 at 100 with the segmented circle .

Math is easier with a 100 meter zero

I love the reticle.

People actually dial instead of use the stadia lines for holds?

Pushed to 388y because that's the longest range near me.

Great optic and reticle, although I have MOA instead of MIL.  Everything I have is 100 yd zero except PCCs, which are 50.

I have taken mine to 350 yards with no issues at all.

Then again I don't understand people who try to use 1-6/8/10 for uber precision work and there are people in this life who enjoy complaining.

And when you make a product, nothing will please everyone.  Ever.

Don't like it?  Move along to something else that gives you wood, ladies.

I’d do a 100m if I planned on doing a lot of holdover/dialing, or a 50/200ish if I planned on mostly dead-hold shooting at closer distances. Either work, but to me the NX8 is more suited to 50/200ish and holding as necessary past that.

I do math with a calculator but I’m old school.

I would use Strelok and see the drop differences between 50yd zero vs 100yd. For me with my ammo and a 50yd zero:
200-0 mils
300-0.9 mils
400-1.9 mils
500-3.1 mils

Pretty simple to hold over and be accurate from 0-500 yards.

I have mine on a 16" 5.56.  I zeroed at 50 yards.  300 yards is the bottom of the segmented circle.

I haven't shot it past that yet.

This might be handy for a 14.5 and M855:
