This is a very helpful thread for someone like me who is new to the M4. For lubrication, I have been told that Rem Oil is very good and that is what I have been using. Any thoughts on this?

Saw this the other day and used it as a guide tonight, first time cleaning and lubing the BCG. Thanks for the useful diagrams!

Thanks.

Thanks for posting this!

Thanks to Quib for the OUTSTANDING pictogram.
I used the above diagaram to lube the one chrome bolt that I have for one of my two AR15's. I lubed it with Rem Oil. I now have to clean my second AR15 which does NOT have a chrome bolt. Someday it will. |

|
Stupid question, (i know there are no such things)
However, how often are you hitting the lube points? Currently I am solely utilizing breakfree and have just under 1000 rds through my AR...... |
|
|
Very helpful.....Thank you.
|
|
|
Ussually after every cleaning. If you are going to range with plans to go thru 300 rds or more, go ahead and lube per diagram.
You milage may vary, but this is what works for me. |
|
|
Guys if you're going to shoot it, a few drops of lube won't hurt. A little lube prevents many problems cause by lack of cleaning.
There are plenty of people here posting how many rounds their rifle runs without lube and cleaning. That's all really impressive but why subject your rifle to that kind of abuse? Clean it, lube it frequently and it will not fail you. IF you are in a world of shit and cannot find lube, ANY lube will do, running it dry will only lead to pre-mature wear and tear. So why do it deliberately? Follow the above manual, and always lube, if you can't clean, lube. |

+1 on the thanks. And, like JonnyRocko asked is it available as a poster?

You guys are welcome.
Sorry, at the time I put those charts together I did not realize how popular they would become, so I never saved them in a format larger than what you'll find on-line. Another idea besides printing them out in poster size, might be laminating them in a size suitable for storage in a field box or cleaning kit. Punch a hole in one corner of each card and run them onto a small key ring. |

I saved and printed them out for my kids to each have a copy of their own. Think I'll get them laminated first though.
Thank you very much! It is very much appreciated! |

Thanks! Very helpful

Great post, it's information like this that makes this place invaluable to both the old and new. And as noted, the laminating and key ring idea is truly awesome.

Thanks! Just shot my AR for the first time today and this was very helpful!

Wanted to thank you for posting this. I shot my new M&P today and used your guidelines. It helped out a lot. No issues what so ever.

Chart doesn't address the bore. After cleaning, what is your opinion on running a light lube on a patch thru the bore? All of my rifles and handguns I do that, but maybe with the chrome lined barrel, it may not be necessary. Great info btw.

That is why lubing of the bore is not included. I personally run a lightly lubed patch down the bore for storage. |

I agree, this is very useful. I do have a question though. Why do the operator manuals from the USMC and Army say "generously lube inside parts of lower receiver and extension assembly"? I don't like that idea but i have a coworker that's hell bent on "hosing it down". To me, a lot of lube would cause a ton of gunk build up and cause problems. Can anyone explain this?
|
|
|
So how often would you recommend re-lubing these points?

On the rare occasion I don't clean I still lube before I shoot again but that's common practice on all my firearms. |

Can anyone explain this? over at LF, many of the BTDT crowd advocate spraying down bolt, carrier, lower until its wet. the lube of choice over there is Slip2000 |
