Hi all,
I have a general question and am new to AR builds. If you are building an short barreled AR as I understand there are two options, either a pistol (possibly with a stabilizer brace) or an SBR. When buying a lower if going the pistol route does the lower need to be registered at that time, and is this the same case when building an SBR?
Thank you.

Michigan, here.

I built my SBRs and pistols from stripped lowers transferred as 'firearms', i.e.: non specific.

When I built them into pistols, I filled out the ri060 form (I'm a CPL holder) registering the receiver as a pistol (transferred to me, from me).

When I made them SBRs, I sent them for engraving and, once safely back, filed electronic form 1.

Build a pistol.

Your lower is not "registeted"... it is transfered.

It does not have be transfered as a rifle or pistol... is can  be transfered as "firearm"

Most now say multi caliber on them for the same reason.

You can legally build what ever you want. Most who plan to SBR build a pistol until the paperwork clears.

Thanks for the clarification on registered verses transferred as well as the other questions, I really appreciate it!
