Hey guys, I spent some time putting together this 3D animation showing how an AR-15 works. Obviously most of you do, but enjoy anyway :D

Damn nice.

The only thing I would add is clarification on how the gas system works.  After the expanding gases enter the chamber between the bolt and the carrier, the carrier is forced rearward since the bolt cannot move forward.  The carrier’s inertia then retracts the bolt.  The gases then vent through the ports on the side of the carrier, once the gas rings on the bolt move to the opposite side of the 2 carrier vents.

Some people mistakenly believe it’s a blast of gases against the key which drives the action.

Edit:  for a little more detail of above, the bolt carrier will start to move before the bullet leaves the barrel.  It must so it has the inertia to operate.  If it didn’t start moving before the bullet left the barrel, then the pressure would drop to near zero and the carrier/bolt/gas rings chamber (essentially a pneumatic cylinder) wouldn’t have enough pressure to operate.  The cam track in the carrier has some movement before the cam touches the angled (rotation causing) part of the cam track.  That straight section before the angle.  This is a time delay function allowing the carrier to get the inertia needed to operate the action and the bullet to leave the barrel and pressure in the barrel/case brass to drop before the bolt starts to rotate.  Don’t want to start bolt unlock before the pressure drops.

Very well done and explains a lot for new user's who don't know how an AR works.

Hope you put a trademark on this animation and nobody's to use it without your consent, cause I'll bet some politicians will steal it and use it for their gun control agenda(s).

This video should be mandatory for all new AR owners or tinkerers to watch.  I honestly believe that this video would answer 30% of the questions we see repeated here week after week because people simply do not really understand how the AR works.  At the very least it be tacked at the top of the trouble shooting and build it yourself sub-forum.

Exactly, it took me a lot longer to figure all that out through my own research.
Great job OP.

What software are you using to do these?

I think that the addition of the buffer explanation would be prudent in the M16 explanation.

Wow, this is certainly some information I didn't know. Your comment isn't the first to bring up how the gases unlock the bolt. Now I'm kicking myself for not researching this portion in more detail. Thanks for the information!

Go back and look at some of his other animations.  Four years ago on the AK-47 there was no voice over and it was much less detailed, but still really good.  Over the years he has greatly improved and refined his skills and I only wish I had 1/100ths of his talent for creating such a program.  The voice over is a tremendous improvement and I cannot help but wonder how many takes it took to get the voice over as perfect as it is.  If Mr. Andy Taylor did that voice over on one try, all I can say is WOW, that man must make a living out of doing voice overs. And if he didn't do it in one take, the editing was seamless.  I don't even what to think how many hours he must have put in to bring out the AR-15 animation.

Thank you so much for watching my other videos :) I appreciate that someone understands the amount of work that goes into these.

Yeah it’s crazy even just looking back at my AK animation without the voiceover. It really does elevate it to a whole new level. I feel quite lucky to have found Andy Taylor’s talent. He really does a fantastic job, and is just a really good guy in general.

Haha anyway, thank you so much for the kind words!
