So I’ve been searching for a 20 inch chrome lined government profile barrel for a while. I happened to finally find one at browells. What I didn’t read in my haste to purchase and until the day after it shipped was that it had a rifle extension….

So I tracked down an A2 stripped upper at Delton and ordered.  My question is this: I have a detachable a2 rear sight from rock river arms, can I use the parts out of that to build out the upper?  I really don’t want to spend more money on this project.

If your rock river detachable is a true A2 system, then there is no reason that you can’t use it as a parts donor to build out your a2 stripped upper. Before you start taking things apart you should study up on how to assembly an a2 rear sight assembly. There are some specialty tools used that ensure proper assembly and save a whole lot of aggravation. Good luck with your project.

If your detachable is marked 8/3 then there is no difference. If it’s marked 6/3 then it’s meant for the detachable. Spend the money to make it right, and besides that detachable sight comes in handy.

Should be fine, check your elevation drum for the 3/8 like said.  Make sure you got an A2 front sight base barrel and not a "F" FSB barrel.  Tearing down and rebuilding that other rear sight might be more trouble than the rear sight kit cost though.

I ordered the correct elevation parts and am calling it good. I never cared for that back up sight anyways…

I never like those detachable carry handles simply because I can’t fit my hand into them.

the one I'm using as a donor isnt a complete handle. It's more like the LMT BUIS on the MK18 but with allen screws.

Your hand can't fit in it because it's not a carry handle.

Then why do they keep calling it that?

Ignorance through constant repetition most likely. Unfortunately once the charging handle was redesigned from inside of the that space to the rear of the upper, they kept the loop that used to protect it in place. Add to that mix, poor weapons discipline during an unpopular conflict and voila, a misnomer.

Ahhh, so it’s been that way for A long long time, I know when I came in the army in the 70s I always heard it called a carry handle

Yes, a long running misnomer. Probably why NCOs were busy pounding it into our heads that it wasn’t a carry handle by the 80s.

Same here, but you better not get caught carrying it that way.

Turns out that carry handle parts are not interchangeable with parts meant for receiver sights (at least this particular sight). I will be ordering an a2 sight kit.

Now that’s funny. I need to go through my earlier A1 manuals to see if it’s listed as such. By 1987 it was being vigorously taught it was not a carry handle.

I just went though a bunch of manuals that I have. All of these call it a carry handle:

Colt Canada Maintenance Manual, C7 Family of Combat Weapons (2005)
FM-3-22.9 Rifle Marksmanship Manual (2008)
TM 9-1005-319-10 Operator's Manual (2010)
TM 9-1005-249-10 Operator's Manual M16A1 (1977)
TM 9-1005-246-10 Operator's Manual M16/M16A1 (1985; updated 1990)

This was on the retro forum.
Check out this video dated 1966, it is specifically called a carrying handled by the United States Army.
