Bought it - thanks!

(I see you removed the hooks, which would be the way to go to make it a vintage, retro looking sling, well done)

Thanks.

Mine has a "unique" scent to it.

Maybe I should say a "vintage" smell.

Bought this government carbine lower on GB. Just got this matching gray upper receiver the other day. Already had the barrel. Very happy with this one.

Dude. I just bought the upper. We must be doing something right:

PS OP, just got the sling yesterday (not pictured). Mine has scent and patina (white-ish stuff on metal parts). How in the world did you get rid of those steel hooks it comes with?

My 6520 has quickly become one of my most favorite AR15s.  The A2 is so great for simplicity!

Much better - whether it's visible or not - you know - one still knows in their mind that '... that lower though...' at least I know it is so for me.

Love the script on your new lower.

ETA I see you also changed the pistol grip. That's another huge element that most underestimate. People think they all look the same, while instead they're widely different - and feel completely different in the hand as well. Since I discovered the ones with a circled 1 inside (original Colts from the 1980s and 1990s) there was no going back for me and I bought a shitload of them, whenever I could find one I'd get it, sometimes even paying 50 bucks for a mint one (NOS from Specialized Armament Warehouse).

The one on your lower now tends to look like one of those. Whether it is or not, it's a big improvement over the one you had on before.

Good eye. It is a new grip.

Pretty sure it is an original Colt from the 90's.

It it is much fatter in the hand than the first grip.

That's it then. Should you one day feel compelled to look inside for the marking, you will see a 1 into a circle.
Those are my favorite ones among them all and I did collect each and every style and almost, brand, out there.

This, IMHO, is the ultimate ''truck-gun"...light, compact and extremely accurate.  When it's time train using "irons", this is what I grab...I've got a Colt Tactical Sling Mount I've been meaning to install on it.

I've added the sling that OP inspired me to get.
This one shown is Troy's sling. But I want to underline that it's the same exact one we'd get on Amazon (shown above) at more than double the price.
The work done to it was to chop off the hooks and swapping those with a nice OD paracord. All work done by Troy's (i.e., you get the sling as you see it here, ready to go with instructions).
The sling smells exactly as the other one you can get more cheaply on Amazon - old and mold - so it's evident that it's exactly the same source of government stock that was then sold off to various distributors. So once and again, they are exactly the same product with the same provenance, the Troy's GAU (so it is marked) being shipped out with nice paracord in lieu than steel hooks.

Very nice.

Looks good.

At least you didn't need to waste your Kung Fu grip on it!!!

Can you share the Troy instructions? Curious.

Tim,
you don't understand: I did that, too. Just like you. But at the same time, I had purchased this one from Troy.

So I have two: one where I applied the Kung Fu grip (and it wasn't easy) and this other one that slipped in like underwear.

For no reason in the world I prefer the Troy's one over Amazon's, however. So keep that in mind.

Instructions incoming (please wait, scanning; come back in a couple of minutes I'll edit this one and add the image here)

Nice looking carbines guys. I have 2 14.5" carbines with detachable carry handles that I'd like to swap out for A2s but I hardly shoot them and they just sit in a surplus rifle rack, ready for my growing fireteam.

Next time try a Dremel with a cutoff wheel for those hooks.

6520 rules

Took a guy from work to the Range this past weekend to teach the basics of operating an AR-15.  We started off with the 6520 and taught basic marksmanship skills then slowly migrated to a BCM EAG w/a T2 and a Colt SOCOM w/an M4 to learn how to use an RDS.

After running a couple of rounds through the EAG and SOCOM, he always came back to the 6520...never having fired one before, this guy said the 6520 would be his top choice of the three.

Long live the A2...

My favorite carbine configuration, with a fixed stock. Don't know why, but collapsible stocks don't do it for me.....

I think I really learned to appreciate collapsible stocks while wearing armor. When the M16A2 arrived in the same decade as the old PASGT Kevlar flak vest, you could still sort of put that big stock in the pocket of your shoulder. Later armor made it more difficult, and collapsible stocks really helped make shouldering a carbine more comfortable.
