Anyone have 12” barrel 6x45 ballistics? I’m curious on what kind of speeds can be attained with 80-90gr bullets.

Thanks

I don't own a 6.5x45 AR-15 but I have quite a bit of experience with the 6.5 Grendel.   With a 6.5 Grendel a 20" AR-15 gets about 2600-2625 FPS with a 100 grain bullet (Wolf 100 grain FMJ).   A 12" 6.5 Grendel gets about 2300-2350 FPS with a 100 grain Wolf.   I read a report on a wildcat 6.5x45 20" AR-15 getting 2620 FPS with a 20" barrel using H-335 and a 100 grain bullet.   That would put a 12" 6.5x45 at 2300-2350 with a 100 grain bullet.  I bet a 90 grain bullet in a 12" 6.5x45 would be around 2400 FPS depending on particular powder.

With using optimum powder CCI 450 primers you might get around 2450-2500 FPS with a 90 grain bullet with a 12" 6.5x45.  A 6.5 Grendel with TAC can get 2700 FPS with a 100 grain bullet in a 20" barrel.   That is about 100 FPS faster than a 6.5x45 20" barrel using H-335 and a 100 grain bullet.

Do you have any numbers for 16" barrels?  I'd expect a drop of about 150 fps, give or take.

Wolf 100 grain FMJ in my 16” 6.5 Grendel upper is 2507 average.   The 20” with Wolf was 2615 with the 6.5 Grendel.   A 12” Faxon chronographs 2364 FPS with Wolf FMJ.  Wolf is loaded pretty light and with the lesser case capacity your not going to get a lot more velocity than the 6.5 Grendel with Wolf.  Best powder with a 90 grain bullet will probably be 2400-2450 FPS maybe a little more in 6.5x45.

I hope someone with a 6.5x45 chimes in.

Found this.

I just picked up a 12in 6x45 barrel. I wanted something faster than a 556 with a 10-12in barrel.

Boy I feel dumb, my vision sucks right now since I just had cataract surgery.  I swore I read 6.5x45 and not 6x45.

Disregard everything I posted because I was comparing 6.5 Grendel to 6.5x45.

6 ARC might be closer to 6x45 but looks like you have the data your looking for.

Sorry again for any confusion.   I’m supposed to get my new glasses soon, boy will I be glad.   I don’t know which is worse, the aches and pains of getting old or the diminishing eye sight, lol.

You bought the barrel set off the EE I was interested in that was the impetus for this thread. :)

Let us know what you can get out of it.

Ha! Looked back and seen you posted in the ad. Will do. I think I'm going to grab some 87g Hornady BTHPs off snipershide and try some other stuff in the 55-60g range.

Barrel in hand. I'll get it in an upper soon and load up some 87g BTHPs as long as the USPS doesn't lose them.

Keep us posted. I would like to see the 85+ weight more than 55-60, I don’t really see a point over a 556 with those weights.

6days with no updates from USPS on my 87s but I did grab some local tonight!

I have 55g Nos Varmint, 70g SMK, 70g BlitzKing, and 85g SGK(HPBT).

Probably going to use XBR8208. I may just go for speed with this gun although 8208 can't shoot a bad group in my 6.5G

Gonna guess somewhere around 2100-2200fps.

My 12" 6 ARC is in the 2300-2350fps range with 108's and the 6x45 seems to run ~ 200-250fps slower with the same bullets all else being (more or less) equal.

Did some load development with the 85s I'll post soon. I like the BC of the 100+grain but they will take up too much case capacity IMO. I did break 2500fps with light ejector swipes so a bit hot and not the most accurate.

12in Xcaliber 6x45
XBR8208
85g SGK
CCI 41
Wolf Gold once fired
32degrees

24g
2347
2318
2318
2326

Only 4 because the 1st shot was at 25yd to see where I was hitting.

24.5g
2389
2389
2380
2398
2359

25g
2433
2437
2460
2450
2411

25.3
2469
2492
2473
2473
2460

Light ejector swipes, turned the gas block down some for 25.6g. Slight powder crunch but did not effect OAL.

25.6
2510 shot 2
2515 shot 3

Sun was hitting my chrono so it missed 3 of these. Ejector swipes almost disappeared after turning the gas down and upping the charge.

Lower right was 24g, low left 24.5g, upper right 25g, upper left 25.3g, and 25.6g was above and not pictured. I was using a TA33R-H for sighting. Looks like 25g gets good velocity and accuracy.(shot in the bottom left corner was sighter at 25)

Any idea on powder options? I'm thinking with the 12in barrel slower stuff like CFE or Varget won't do as well velocity wise as XBR or H335.

Far left 25.6, next right 25.3, and 25.

Looking at the brass again even 25.6g should be GTG with the gas turned down. Obviously want to be careful if going to a hot summer day.

16” barrel 2700ish with 90gr BT’s. My favorite load though is 90 gr GameChangers loaded long using a windowed mag, 2640fps. Super sonic out to 1k yards.

I have a 10.5 in 6x45 and I can get 2450-75 or so with 87’s. Also just over 2500 with  some 85 soft points I got from grafs in bulk. It’s a great SBR round really. When I was working at AO, We cut it with a “6x45 Wylde” reamer, and used a brux barrel, it’s also very accurate, for what it is. Especially so with Sierra 70 gr match kings. I have another barrel we made I’ll be listing soon that’s around 14in or so.

Craziest load I have is some of the Lehigh defense 57 grain cqc with the aluminum tip removed, and AA1680. I ordered them just for this, and they came with no tips, which was serendipitous as they won’t fit the mag with the tip. They are crazy fast with the 1680. Think along the lines of a 16 in 223 with 55’s.

Also note if you have a KAC NT4, it can handle 6mm, just have to bore out the adapter. I used a griffin armament comp.. super loud but actually works pretty well, and suppressed it’s not bad at all.

I get 2624 fps with an extreme spread of 14 fps from my 12.5 inch BHW barrel.
Sierra 85 grain bthp over max load of tac powder.
