Win makes a white box 62 OTM for much cheaper; I think it’s a Hornady bullet.

I doubt there’s much difference.

I agree. Way more open than the Swedish stuff which was a drawn OTM.  This thing looks, near as I can tell, as if it's got petals.

41.5 cents a round seems a little high to me for 62 gr OTM. I preference and can get a heavy OTM for about the same price as this stuff. For 62 gr, I'd rather have a FMJ or a SP. 62 gr BTHP/OTM doesn't do well out of shorter barrels.

If anyone bought a lot and wants to sell me 150 of them for testing, I can clear gel test it :D

62 gr BTHP/OT works great out of my 10.5/11.5/12.5 barrels, hell, out of all of my barrels
ETA: this is USSS stuff man, get with the program.

Appears to be the same bullet used in the purple “training only” DHS load

Concur. I'll be curious to hear how velocity/gel testing stacks up against the Swedish stuff. I scarfed a boatload of that while Sam had it; it runs wonderful & accurate out of my 11.5" as well as the 14.5".  This is notably more spendy though & I have a fort now made out of the other stuff so probably won't pop for any.

Its OOS @ SGA but another vendor has it if you google it for about $0.40 a round, by case lot. It looks to be a collectable only item to me or maybe range fodder. The vendor charges tax everywhere also which is a pain.

So I got a case of the itchy wallet & no ammo purchases this year...…………….& bought a case.

Still in stock, you may be looking at the old stuff-ZQ3314

Yes, I was looking @ the old stuff. The new stuff is a little more expensive, but on stripper clips. The Swedish ammo wound up in my ammo stash before it went out of stock, so the Secret Service offering might also depending how the OT @ work goes next week.

Now SG has 5 cases left after I made a driveby on their stock. Watch & see if they restock & the number goes back up. I will almost make a bet that the purple stuff is the same as the SS ammo other than the color & packaging.

They did specifically mention it was a “one time deal”...maybe that’s why they removed the listing after it sold out?

They don’t call it the “secret” service for nothing

I think he was referring to the terminal perfomance of the round.

I prefer the 62/64 gr gold dot load out of short barrels.

I was at SG to grab another case of M855 for the fort and saw this stuff ,there where 9 of these  left after I grabbed one last weekend
looks like normal ammo to me other than the projectile which I had not see this exact one before.

If you look really closely at SGs pictures, you can see the SS ammo does indeed have that same odd, squared crimp.

Here's some info.
2019 stamped brass with Nato circle cross.
26.0 grains of ball powder.
No sealant on primer or bullet.
Erratic crimping. Every round is different, and many appear to have none at all.
The bullet has a slightly thicker base than most, and definitely has the 'talon' configuration on the inside of the tip.
Not saying it's bad ammo, just not up to the specs of MK318 for sure. No doubt it will be an effective defense round.
A gel test will determine how well it works, and for now this 'Secret Service' ammo to me is really just a collector sort of round, and in my opinion only, the price is very fair for what is offered, especially with the strippers, spoons, and cardboard sleeves.  Sorry about the clarity of the photos.

Great post

I look at at as an economical self defense round. Better than 193/855 fo sho...

I’d love to see some gel and barrier testing. The one gel test I saw with this type of bullet looked promising...

Has anyone tried that round?  I'm interested in how well it works.

I don't need purple ammunition but I thought they were interesting.  One retailer listed velocity and energy specs that were pretty impressive so I don't know why DHS would make them training only rounds - or why people who don't usually care that they have virtually unlimited taxpayer dollars to buy there stuff would train with different ammunition than they would use in the field.

I’ve read some reasonable theories why it may be a “training only” load. Certain requirements for their “duty” load may include sealed primers and bullets, expensive top level cases, flawless crimps and extensive lot testing and inspections. All things that add significantly to the price of ammo and therefore reduce the amount they can get for a fixed budget. If they eliminate those requirements, which are pointless for range ammo, they get more ammo for $x,xxx, xxx.

The ammo is purple to clearly identify it so it doesn’t get used on duty. Otherwise it is the same as their duty load...same bullet, same powder and same velocity.

There is a pretty good gel test video on it...seems to do the job.

Could be. I have been very disappointed with Winchester 5.56 "Q3131" from their Oxford plant (WMA headstamps).

Multiple lots observed from 2017-2019 have this terribly inconsistent case mouth crimp. Also within a lot, very inconsistent primer crimps, inconsistent seating depths/crimping groove location, very bad projectile runout, primer seals from non-existent to covering the entire primer, sealed and unsealed necks within the same box. Yes, I pulled down a whole 20 round box just to confirm this.

I will no longer buy Winchester 5.56 after the crap I've seen lately.

After lurking for a month or so, here`s my first question to all with much more experience and knowledge than I...is the purple DHS Training round (ZQ3340) worth .35 a round? It seems like it would make a good SD round.

Probably would be a good HD-SD (under 50 yards) round
