I'm prepping to run velocity tests this spring on 6.5 Grendel from 12.5" and 18" barrels (similar to my 5.56 tests from last year). I'm looking for opinions on which loads you all would like to see tested.

I have a short list, some of which I've acquired and some I still need to. What else do I need to include?

Here's my list:

Federal Gold Medal Berger-130gr ELD
Federal Fusion MSR 120gr
Hornady Black 123gr ELD
Hornady Custom 123gr SST
Federal Am Eagle 120gr OTM
Federal Am Eagle Varmint 90gr TNT
Wolf Mil Classic (Steel) 100gr FMJ
PRVI 120gr HPBT
Wolf Gold 120gr MPT
Hornady AMAX 123gr

I'll be anxious to see your results!  I've subscribed.  I have a 20" rifle and a 12" pistol in 6.5G.  I haven't done any serious range work, just shooting a few boxes of factory ammo so far, accumulating brass for reloading.  Wolf Gold shot some really good groups in my rifle.  Not as good as AMAX, but better than I expected.

Please list the manufacturers of your barrels, material ie 416R SS, 4150 Nitride, 4140 CMV ect with twist and type of rifling, 5R, polygonal, standard rifling.

I’d be interested if you have any handloads you can chronograph, especially with 129 grain Nosler ABLR (Accu Bond Long Range) which supposedly expands down to 1300 FPS.

Alexander Arms sells ammunition as does Les Baer, Pecision Fierearms and Night Ops.

Precision Fierarms ammunition is pricey but most ammo is loaded using new Lapua brass which cost about $1.00 each.  Les Baer ammunition is loaded by Black Hills.

I'll be starting a new thread for it but I'll post a link in this one (if it's still active). I'm basically waiting on a decent day around 70 degrees, which in MN is usually sometime in May.

Thanks for the feedback on Wolf Gold!

Good suggestions on that ammo. I'll look into them. Handloads are something I'm staying away from for these tests. I'm looking at commercial loads that most people can acquire without too much hassle.

ETA: Both barrels are BA Performance Series 416R SS.

Sounds good!   There has been information that polygonal and 5R barrels produce higher velocity than traditional rifling (Enfield type) so that is why I wanted to know the type of barrel.

A Friend and I chronographed several loads through 16”, 18” 20” and 24” 6.5 Grendels in 2016 using a Magnetto Speed chronograph.   Not much chronograph data for 12.5” 6.5 Grendel barrels.   Many new owners of 6.5 Grendel AR-15’s do not reload and I think your to commended for providing this information!

I have a PACT chronograph and I was wanting to chronograph my 6.5 Grendel AR-15’s again.   I have a 16” 4140 CMV 1:9 twist 6.5 Grendel barrel a 16” 1:8 twist Faxon 5R, 18” 1:8 twist Faxon 5 R EE and a 20” 1:9 twist Shilen to test.

Hornady also released the American Gunner line with a 6.5 Grendel with a 123 grain BTHP.  This ammo was only distributed by Sportsman warehouse but was competitively priced.

I used your data you made on .223 quite a bit. The two 6.5G’s I’m putting together are a 12.5” and 18” so this is awesome for me. I’m really looking forward to seeing your results.

I chrono my 18" JP medium contour barrel with and without a sandman L suppressor using 123gr black ammo.

I did the same with a faxon group buy 12.5 barrel with sandman s suppressor with the same bullet.  Let me know if you want the info.

Where are you finding 65g ammo?

So far everywhere I've looked seemed to be sold out, out of stock, back order.

Hornady Black seems to be non-existent other than CTD site

I've been slowly acquiring it as I've seen it available. Hornady Black is one of the loads I've gotten.

This "mini panic" we're in sure hasn't helped recently. I've placed two orders at sites that sell Grendel ammo and and wasn't able to get anything different than I already have

I've still got a while before the weather warms up so hopefully things settle down and availability increases. If not, I'll either have to postpone the test or lean on you fine folks to get a better variety.

Ha! I want 70 degrees or so, not for my comfort, but to do the testing in generally neutral conditions. That usually means May for us.

If you want, you can come up and take some snow off our hands. 14" in late February over 4 days followed up by 6 inches of heavy wet stuff this past Monday night. Both of those over a base of about 16 inches we've had on the ground most of the winter. I've got ice dams on my roof in places I've never had them before!

Does anyone have 20 rounds of Hornady American Gunner 123gr BTHP they're willing to part with for this test?

I'm willing to pay fair market value + shipping if anyone can send it to me. It's OOS at Sportsmans Warehouse and I'm not sure I want to buy 200rds of it just for this test if it does come back in stock.

PM me if you can help and we'll work it out. Mods if this post is an issue here, please let me know and I'll take it down and figure something else out.

^^Same for Wolf 120gr MPT. It's OOS everywhere. I'm on the list at a lot of sites to be alerted if/when it comes back in stock but I'm not holding my breath.

For 12.5" with 123gr Hornady, you'll be in the 2270-2330fps region.

From 18", you'll be in the 2450-2520fps region with all the 123gr and 120gr factory loads in my experience.

I've chrono'd a lot of different barrels over the years from 16" to 24", mostly 16", 18", and 20" across AA, Lilja, Satern, Liberty, PF-Criterion, PF-Bartlein, and now LaRue.

I have a 12" Faxon group buy barrel with the 5REE rifling I need to wring out.

Looking at 130gr Nosler RDF for maximum supersonic reach with a pistol.

Looks like it will be well past 1000yds for me. Should be fun.

Apparently, hornady black ammo is very temperature senstive.  I'm going to chrono it during the summer time were temperatures could reach 90 to 100 degrees here. My numbers were on a nice fall day.

Same here. Love pistol AR’s and looking for optimum length for 1000 yards. May replace my 12.5 308 and 10 inch 300 BO if length isn’t to long. The 308 seems to get heavier as I get older. AR15 platform would help. 224 Valkyrie hasn’t become ready for prime time so this caliber is what I’ll focus on for now.

Bearcat24 what elevation are you shooting?   I do most of my shooting between 350 and 450 feet above sea level.   With 123 grain bullets at 2425 FPS out of a 16” 6.5 Grendel and .510 G-1 BC I’m really close to the transonic zone at 1000 yards.   I haven’t shot any of the 129-130 grain match bullets but their performance will be similar even though they might be up to 100 FPS slower than the 123 grain bullets.    The chronograph results with 12” 6.5 Grendel show 2300-2350 FPS with 120-123 grain bullets IIRC.

I know LRRP52 does a lot of his shooting at higher elevation where the atmosphere is thinner which affects the bullets trajectory in a positive manner.  The velocity doesn’t depreciate as fast at higher elevation.

You stated optimum length for 1000 yard shooting with the 6.5 Grendel.   Shooting at 350’-450’ ASL I chose a 20” Shilen 6.5 Grendel but I also have 16” and 18” 6.5 Grendel.   At sea level you might need a 22”-24” 6.5 Grendel to get the velocity needed to stay supersonic to 1000 yards.   You”ll probably need a 20 MOA mount to shoot passed 800 yards with a 6.5 Grendel at lower elevations.
