If it’s a yes, would you recommend Springfield Armory or POF? Purpose is SHTF/General Defense/Pig Hunting.

I don't see the point, I see 16" and really 18" if no suppressor as the minimum for 308. POF

That's going to be an extremely loud, dirt and gassy, fireball right in front of your face.  I have a 16" FAL and I would not recommend going much shorter than that.

For fun? Sure!!! For real use? No... There's much more practical guns out there. Like 300blk for 9 inch barrels. Or 6.8mm SPC, 5.56mm, 7.62x39mm, 5.45x39mm for 12" barrels. For 308 you really want 16" at least to be practical. I mean 18" is usually preferred though. The Tavor 7 solved my needs for a super short 308 rifle.

Damn....I forgot about the Tavor 7 and was concentrating on a Scar17 instead of a pistol. I’ll look into that a Tavor.

OP, you want .300blk or if you want cheaper ammo and don't care about subsonic, an AR pistol that fires 7.62x39 from AK mags.

I put together a 12.5" .308 with Aero stuff. Fun gun to shoot with a suppressor. I still use my 300 BO for pig hunting.

Have I got a deal for you...

Chambered in .308...built and shot in competition by none other than Mr. John Sinclair (Sinclair International) himself, a Remington XP-100 bolt action pistol, 14" barrel, Leopold scope, ready to go...  I actually have a collection of XP-100's from my IHMSA shooting days and picked this up when he listed it on a forum for sale like 15 years ago.  I put maybe 20 rounds through it.  You would NEVER want to shoot a 40 or 80 round match with it, but its a damn accurate pistol for hunting.  About to sell it off with my other XP's as I havent shot IMHSA in over a decade and the sport is fading away quickly.

Oh, its a beast.

Before ammo retardation, x39 subs could be had for .50 to .75 cents each. x39 does everything 300blk does, only cheaper. And it can't be chambered by mistake in a 5.56 AR

Only if parts compatibility is not a factor.

I recently rebarreled a 10.3" pistol into .300blk over x39 specifically because of this.

In between naps on my deer stand this weekend, I actually started thinking about a 308 AR Pistol for just this purpose.

Do we have any dedicated 308 AR Pistol photo posts on arf? I think I need some further inspiration..

we've done this several times. Recently even. Not sure where all the fudds with their gun-counter wisdom came from.

308 out of a 12.5" barrel will launch same-weight projectiles hundreds of fps faster than a 16" 7.62x39 and/or much heavier bullets at similar speeds for way more energy and sectional density. There might be a barrel length where 308 and 7.62x39 ballistics actually meet but it isn't 12.5". Same goes for 300blk obviously.

The SCAR 17 with a 13" barrel isn't a joke and has been popular in sof units. One team guy I was at the range with in afghanistan was telling me they were shooting guys at 600m with the 13" barreled gun we were shooting (see below).

I have a few short 308s and they aren't noticeably louder or more concussive than my short 556 guns.

Almost everything posted so far in this thread is unfounded, but oft-repeated internet lore.

Concussion isn't as much of a thing as you seem to think it is. Like I said - it's not any worse with my short 308s than it is with my short 556s. I mean, if you can't handle either one that's a different story. Maybe the centerfire rifle thing isn't for you.

Also maybe stop using a brake? A 10.5" 556 with a brake is much more concussive than a 12.5 or 13" 308 with a flash hider or bare muzzle. Based on my personal experience shooting them both back to back.

Either way, throw a can on it and concussion goes away completely. Suppress all the things.

I would have ZERO problem packing a short 308 for any purpose really. D16mans 308 pistol looks like an excellent weapon.

I built a 12” .308 SBR. Sweet rifle, tamed the gas with an SLR Glas block and use an AAC can. Easily one of my most fun rifles. It’s got me strongly considering a clone of the SLR 7.5” .308 with a dedicated Rugged can.

Your perceptions are your own, never posted anything about muzzle devices, suppressors are not allowed for everyone.

I built one for "first built as" legal reasons that I run all my large frame lowers on with a smooth round buffer tube to "pop their cherry" as pistols rather then rifles and then later convert to rifle with long barrel upper and carbine or rifle buffer tube and stock so that I leave my future options open to use that lower as pistol, firearm, or rifle in the future.

Got a 308 pistol length barrel to build that upper because that was what I could find for a reasonable cost.

I put a linear comp on the end of the barrel and it does seem to help at least when firing on an outdoor range to push the concussion and blast more in the downrange direction. (I was running just bare muzzle with a thread protector to start with!)

With the right ammo it is accurate.

Difficult to use one handed, especially without an arm brace strapped to the arm but still certainly possible.  Second support hand on the forward handguard and cheakweld on the bare buffer tube and it is very good especially with a single point sling adjusted just right to be tight at extension in said shooting position.  Arm brace plus second hand works as well but actually not as well if you are using arm brace as arm brace compared to just cheek weld only on bare buffer tube.

Unless you get really lucky your going to want an adjustable gas block to tune it down so it don't kick really bad due to being over gassed with the short pistol gas system and only a two weight shorty buffer that even with double tungsten weights still isn't enough to tame without AGB.

Provided things go correctly politically and the ATF gets smacked down with the shenanigans they are trying to pull.  In the future I intend to do a second "for reals" large frame upper in a far more appropriate cartridge configuration that will be large bore to work better in a short barrel.  45-Raptor is the most obvious choice but I am not a fan of straight wall cartridges with absolutely zero taper in a semi-auto action and I also am not a huge fan of cartridges that headspace on the case mouth.  So something similar based on a belted case with a little taper is probably the way I will go.

Also, if you are a person who has shot AR-15 pistols with a cheek weld only on a smooth pistol buffer tube using a "nose to charging handle" hold to maximize as much facial contact and stabilization effect.  DO NOT DO THAT WITH THE LARGER 308 !!!  You will get a cut bleeding nose tip, I'll let you all wonder how I know that.   Keep your face back a couple inches to allow the gun to recoil without smacking into you.  That's also where the single point sling kept short and tight so that your pushing out into the sling comes into play as well.

Also if your 26+" then you can go "firearm" category and ad a good forward grip for second hand.  I personally prefer one that is not true vertical but has a slight 10-degree angle or so.  It really helps to push out into the sling for stability and recoil control.

My current upper was never intended to be anything but an economical large frame upper to serve as a "cherry popper" but I have actually learned to like it a lot.  With the linear comp to direct the blast mainly down range, the adjustable gas block properly tuned, a single point sling kept short and pushing out into that sling with both hands very firmly one on the pistol grip the other on the forward grip and cheek welding on the buffer tube it works surprisingly well.  I would actually consider it a fairly viable bear defense PDW punching rifle rounds and flash/bang a charging bear in the face all in one !!!

Here is my .308 12.5, I don't think it is any louder than any other rifle, though I wouldn't want to shoot it indoors:
Definitely required an adjustable gas block, one click changed from ripping off case rim vs cycling properly.
