OP is right. I too am collecting parts, for a "gunsmith hard times" style 80's AR9.
Mine is having a 16.1" can with radiator hose heat shield with modern guts. And I have the same as pictured, 80's UltraDot. My upper is going to be modded for that red dot. Why ? The Gunsmiths of yesteryear pushed the envelope back then... So we could have it easy today. And they look Bad Ass  .

I too have been wanting one of those A1 uppers with the carry handle completely milled off for a build I want to do. They used to be everywhere when I didn't want one, but now....
I Might have to get one of the Brownells and go that route. |

You could still do it with an M4 or A3 upper. Grid it down or shave it. Then drill an tap them mount a WEAVER base on it. That's the 60's to late 80's style.
Then you would still need to mill the brass deflector off. A repro upper would need less work. |

somewhere I have a Colt SP1 upper that was chopped,
someone ground off the entire charging handle, and attempted to glue, and screw, a weaver rail to it, needless to say, it did not work, been tempted to find a good welder and have it welded on, and use as a dedicated 22 upper, but never got around to it, dude hacked off the FSB as well, but I had a replacement and sold the barrel off, back then flat top's were not available, so the gotta have a scope guys got out the hacksaw (Carry mount scopes are a bit high,,,, but yall know that) |

I remember my first flat top upper, bought it new at a gun show in the early 90's.
I think it was a C7 that had a rail welded on. It was pretty seamless and looked like a modern flat top except I found out later that it was slightly taller than MilSpec. |

They pop up for sale from time to time.
The first so-called space gun I ever saw was about 1988 or so, and it had a Redfield International rear sight bolted up to the carry handle with some kinda adapter block for a base. It was a laser at 200 & 300 yards but fast-twist barrels and heavy bullets hadn't come along yet so it gave back at 600 much of what it had gained at the short lines. He was using a no-trap A1 butt stock with a 30" long heavy barrel and it didn't balance very well for off-hand, but you could see he was on to something........ |

M1D Garand is more accurate than a "stock" production line M1 Garand but the ole plain Jane gets the job done! MoPars don't go far but it's better than no car! |

Not 1980s but original old school 1960s Vietnam use.

In the 80s I worked for a gun shop that would do these conversions on occasion. There were not many scope options back then and guys that were experimenting with the AR15 for accuracy were forced to try things like this. Sometimes they were laughed at - this was the era of M1 Garand and M14 ruled the ranges and the AR15 was regarded as inaccurate all the way around. We owe much to the early year guys that chopped ARs to find out what worked and didn't with the system and take it to where it is today.
Chop a what was then nearly ubiquitous upper was at the time not seen as a waste - it was experimental with what was widely available. One machinist I now actually machined his own Aluminum rail and had it professionally welded it to a milled off A1 - he had access to aerospace fabrication equipment and expertise. There was probably a huge amount of labor hours into what is now equivalent to a $39 upper. He later converted it to a Rhino piston - an early piston conversion. Sinful by todays standards, but they were trailblazers in their own right. |
