It's been so long since I owned a 12 gauge I feel out of touch with today's ammo.

Depends on usage/purpose.

Federal Flite Control #1 for 2-legged.

Brenneke Black Magic Magnum for big, furry 4-legged (or barrier blind).

Hexolit for the helluvit.

Cheapest 00 buck and slugs I can find.  It's a shotgun.  No need to get fancy at down the staircase distances.  This gives me the added advantage of being able to shoot my shotgun's "Carry ammo" on a regular basis without breaking the bank.  I know exactly where/how my shotgun patterns with 00 buck at expected usage distances and where the slugs are flying and I get to practice with that often.

Full power, 1325 fps Federal Flight Control 9 pellet 00B.

Pattern at a full 50 yards from 22" IC barrel:

And at home defense max of 15 yards:

Mine.  Steel or lead or? Heavy upland: 11/4 oz 5s @ 1330fps. Special attention to Federal S4 wads, they cover all the shot. Steel: BB or BBB, Ranger wad from Ballistics products 1.25oz., granulated buffer, and vibrated to form an even pack, Win Mark 5  3".  Wicked shit

HD I'm partial to #1. Live in a cookie cutter home with thin walls, family members, and pets. I feel it's a good compromise from 00.

Target/throwaway ammo. Hard to beat the price on Federal's 100 shell field packs. Or a case of #7/#8 Estate shells which is owned by Federal anyways.

.

Why shoot “fancy” ammo?

Your pix; that’s why.

+1.  Right now I have a 30" barrel and plug in my FN slp that I haven't bothered to change since last dove season.  Therefore, I'd say my favorite load is Federal target #7.5 at 23¢/rd or 2 3/4" #3 black cloud from last year's rebate sale at 30¢/rd.  Any 00 I have was under 30¢/rd (fed, s&b, estate).

I have shot Federal LE127 rounds and at 7 yards it is almost like shooting slugs. I was using a FNH 18" SLP:

I'm more of a slug person. I like using the Winchester PDX1 slug/buck shot combo. Seems to be really nasty.

I also like the Winchester deer slug. It feels powerful when shooting and it hits dead on out of a cylinder bore. Seeing the type of damage it does to a deer and the fact that it flattens to a near 2" solid lead, I just can't help but feel safe with it.

I tried the buckshot and the Hornady critical 00 is my favorite but the Remington 00 buckshots seem to have the tightest group at 25 yards. The winchester 00 military buckshots seem to have the worst. Only problem is it doesn't feel as powerful as the deer slugs. After shooting a case of deer slugs, the buckshots feel like a .22 to be honest. The Hornady is the most powerful buckshot but the Remington and the military buckshots seem to be the weakest feeling.

Buckshot: Federal LE132-1 #1 buckshot (~20% more cross sectional area than 9 pellets of 00 buck)

Slugs: Brenneke THD - Brenneke slugs have a wad that doesn't separate from the slug

Hornady Critical Defense - 8-pellet 00 Buck launched at 1600fps and also utilizes the same design of the Flite-Control wad.

Hornady really thought about this and got it right!

Federal flitecontrol 8 pellet. Patterns fantastic in my 18.5" Mossberg 500. Easy on the shoulder.
That said, if I don't have that, I can run what I brung in that Mossy. Just won't have as much range as I do with the flitecontrol.

Haven't shot anything with the truballs yet. Anyone know if they'll pass through deer?
