Quoted: If you want a free floating barrel, pay $100 for a FIRSH instead. The panels are just fine and comfortable enough. You'll save hundreds of dollars, and won't add nearly as much weight. IMHO a SIR is only useful if you plan on adding _everything_... a forward grip, flashlight, laser, AND night vision equipment. Otherwise it's just a waste of weight and money. View Quote Feel free to voice your opinion on this website but you're obviously new here. Better get your flame suit ready. Yeah that's another thing that's amusing, the thought that if you're new to the board you must be a newbie all together. As if this board is just so great that anyone and everyone who owns a firearm uses it.

Posterboy, your post count doesnt much make a difference to me, theres some serious folks on here with post counts far lower than many, and they know more of what they are talking about than most.
The FIRSH is a good system for what it costs, no doubt. I have one and have built a few rifles with them. But they are not in the same leauge as the SIR or RAS II etc. I've done a rather detailed comparison of the systems and the FIRSH heats up MUCH quicker than the SIR. In fact, the SIR doesnt heat up at all from my testing. At least not the lower portion. Also, Im not saying the pannels arent comfortable, I think they are. But the pannels restrict air flow and help retain heat in the barrel instead of letting it escape. They are also another part to loose because the pannels for the FIRSH can not be locked on like the pannels of a RAS system. Plus the covers increase the diameter of the system by a very noticable amount. Plus you need 4 covers to cover a complete section of rail on a carbine lenght and 12 total covers to completely cover the 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions. Thats a lot of loose covers isnt it? I think half that many is a lot. You'll need many more for a mid or rifle length. You could get some of the aftermarket covers that cover the whole thing with a single cover, but they are even beefier and will restrict EVEN MORE airflow. You could take the pannels off and increase airflow and heat dissipation, but then your hands are on bare aluminum, and not smooth aluminum, we're talking ragged aluminum rails. And once you start shooting, they are on bare, ragged aluminum that is very hot. I doubt the weight of the SIR vs. the FIRSH is not much of a difference at all. Here is a graph made by placing a digital thermometer on both systems and ripping 5 mags through each on full auto. It must be stated in advance that the SIR reading was taken on a day where it was significantly hotter. Also, the SIR gun still had tha hadgaurd cap installed which decreased airflow and cooling. Even with these two handicaps, the SIR system heated much slower and the max temp was far less than the FIRSH. Had we done the tests on the same day and had the FIRSH system also had the handgaurd cap installed, the results would have been even more drastically in the SIR's sytems favor. In this picture you can see how the heat from the FIRSH started to melt and deform the pannels that are needed to protect your hand. The SIR also locks onto the weapon making it a MUCH more stable platform for mounting anything if you so choose. I am not bashing the FIRSH. I think it is a good sytstem at an affordable price. I am just pointing out that the many advantages of the SIR have far less to do with mounting anything to its rails than Posterboy implies. Dont mean to hi-jack the thread. Posterboy or anyone else, I would be happy to continue this on another thread. If you would like to, maybe we should start a new one. It's been a while since we've had a SIR vs. FIRSH thread. So far the SIR is undefeated in the many threads I've seen. Shall we go another round [:P] |

PosterBoy, you are starting to sound like the Dixie Chicks; you state your opinion, but then get mad when someone else states theirs, then you want to take your toys and go home.
One thing that I've seen on this forum, everyone has an opinion, you may or may not agree with those opinions, but that's all they are -- opinions. Read them all and make a sound judgment. But if you come out making remarks that someone else's stuff is crap or your crap doesn't stink; expect to get flamed. It's all in good fun, and if you dish it out, you should be able to take it. |

If you don't like it don't rag on people who drop the dime on it. It's a nice system regardless so let someone play if they want to. the SIR system is regarded as top of the line so why go around pissing on it? |

I have a RAS, not a SIR, and even I can appreciate the advantages of what the SIR offers. It's okay to be wrong Posterboy...it's okay.
Just attach a beer animation like this [beer] to every post you write and all will be ... okay. |

I have a couple AR's one has a simple aluminum free-float tube the rest wear the stock forearms that they were born with. I do like hearing about the alternatives especially with graphs and such. Nice job NEWARGUY! You (and several others) helped me out last year when I was trying to figure out what optic I wanted for my then new flat top.

hey new ar-guy,
since its "just an airsoft" what do you say i make you an incredible offer for the top one? say... $350 $400 bucks?? cant be worth any more than that. can it? [;)] |

Colt M16A1 Carbine, registered and transferable, not for sale... Not shown are my .22 suppressed upper, another dedicated 22 upper, and a 9mm upper. Also not shown is my Shrike upper which is not in yet.. I just sold an Olyarms CAR15 clone, and a 6700 Colt Hbar. SP1 is on the block now at local pawnstore. When ban sunsets, I might replace the Hbar.

It's been almost 10 years now, but I visited some Airsoft (etc) stores in the Tokyo/Yokohama area and they were unbelievable. If I hadn't been spending myself silly on stereo, amateur radio and photo/video stuff I woulda gone broke there.
M-60s, almost any AR variant you could imagine, Garands, M-14s, wooow. |

My favorites so far have been the super-tactical tactical red "X" models. Not only are they small and red, they're shaped like "X"'es, too! It's great!!

Yojimbo.
Post a picture of your sweet rifle again when you get the Vltor stock on it? I'm trying to build the same setup as you but my funds are always running low. Thanks, |
|
fott,
I know what you mean![:D] I should be getting the Vltor in 2 weeks, I hope Wes/MSTN has those Colt spec tubes in stock by then. I'm also putting cash back for a weapon light. I'm probably going with a Surefire M900a but if I decide differently I may go with the M962SU6. Talk about cash, the AR disease is not a cheap one! Especially when you have a house and 3 car payments, etc. Not to mention the wife, three kids and the dog! DOH!!![BD] |
