oh yeah? why's that? the bolt rides on 4 rails, i didn't paint the rails, the only thing painted is the carrier what you see, which doesn't contact anything, it may look like it but i didn't just go and spray the gun with the dustcover open, there was alot of prep/masking on this gun

It really seems like your going to get paint in your upper reciever from flaking when you start getting friction from shooting mixed with grime and grease from the gases. And what about when you clean your bcg? I know they coat Bcg's with various metals for optimum friction, I know that duracoat is not optimum for friction
But if you used some sort of special paint that's simular to the coating a bolt already has then your all good right
Looks Fantastic BTW

i dont think you're reading what i wrote, the part you see that's painted doesn't ever contact anything other the button on the back side of the dust cover (might as well be nothing) there is no friction against that part of the bolt, i fired over 100 rounds thru the gun since the paint and it still looks the same other than it got dirty, which just wiped off, if you bolt is showing wear where mine is painted you've got some serious problems

pic thread

btw, cool to see you've got a subie, i've got 2 (STi, and regular impreza)

Here's my two:
Had this one for almost a year. Great and accurate to shoot at anything out to 200 yds, only limit is the red dot sight (and the shooter);
Rock River Tactical CAR A4 .223
7 Position Collapsible Stock
Quick Release Holographic Red Dot sight, and Flip Down Front Sight
16" Barrel 1:9, with SEI Flash Suppressor and Compensator (it's loud)
CAA FFG4 Front Handle
Olympic Arms Rail w/ cheap flashlight and pressure switch

Here's my other one
This is new, only had it a few days. I wanted something like this just after I realized how accurate the Tactical CAR could be if it had some great sights on it. This rifle is much more accurate of a rifle than I am a shot, which was what I was looking for. Here's the goods:
Rock River Varmit A4 .223
24" Stainless Steel Bull Barrel w/ 1:8 twist
ACE Skeleton Stock
Bushnell 5X15X40mm with Warne Ultra High Mounts
Harris Ultralight 25C Bi Pod

You'll be fine, painting a bolt carrier isnt going to hurt it.  Even if you did paint the contact areas, it would just wear off.  I have several kryloned bolt carriers with no issues, and they were far sloppier than yours.

If a little paint on the carrier were enough to stop an AR, we would all be in trouble.

looks good btw.

Hey folks, new member here!  I have lurked for awhile and then with some nice holiday down time, I thought I'd join and post some pics of my firearms.  I am most excited about my first AR-15 purchase; a Sabre Defence Massad Ayoob Signature Series XR15A3.  Sabre is local here in Nashville, TN and has been making barrels for our service and civilian .50 cal and others for years.  Uppers and lowers are CNC'd together, vanadium barrel, gil brake, EoTech optics, etc.  check out their catalog here:
http://www.sabredefence.com/sabre_web_catalog21.pdf

Of course, I had to include a shot that includes my first ever semi-auto, a Ruger mini 14 and my favorite hunting rifle, a Tikka T3 in .300 WSM with Swarovski optics.

ps...where on this forum do you create a signature and avatar?  Can't find the typical 'user CP" button anywhere...

Took the opportunity for a few changes and the guys at Sabre were awesome.  First, I wanted to change my standard forearms (pictured above) for rail style.  I went with Samson and they were installed at Sabre by one of their gunsmiths.  Next, I had them install a flip-up rear sight, for which I chose Yankee Hill.  Lastly, I had them change out the ambi-safety to a standard right-hand selector.  They did a great job and now I can shop for accessories; a hand-grip, flashlight and laser are probably among them.  Enjoy.

Whats the pen like object on the rail?
Link Posted: 1/10/2008 4:02:18 PM EDT
[#25]
I think I asked the same question about 15 pages earlier. It is a flare. It can be aimed at an object or fired into the air. It is a compact signal flare (designed for aviators I would assume). Apparently, troops at check points have to use them to fire at a vehicle as a warning if the vehicle does not stop or comply with their commands. It is part of their escalation of force rules in some units. Before you shoot at them with bullets you shoot at them with a flare. the idea of the mount is so that you can fire the flare and keep the rifle on target at the same time.

Proof that you can mount anything on a rail.

IIRC the guys in Iraq were having trouble shouldering their weapons while shooting that warning flare (which is what the thing is, a QD attachment for the signal flare you see there) at cars approaching checkpoints.

So LaRue made that piece of kit to make the job a little easier.

ETA: Damn, mdwicks got it.

This was my 2nd build, my 1st true upper build. Complete PITA!! Had to turn the bull barrel down from 1.05" to .95" on a lathe at work to fit the Larue rail, then I had to mill a slot in the bottom of the rail to access the gasblock set screws. A little more filing and fitting here and there, and wah-la. My membership ran out in the process and I blew my load on this build so as soon as I get some more cash in my grubby little mits, I'm gonna re-up. Thanks to all you guys in Arfcom land for the inspiration and help.

That's pretty much it.  AWESOME job.
I'm about to get an M16A2 clone.
Don't need it, just like the look, feel, etc.

Next is an M16A4.
REALLY don't need that but what the heck.

And after that is an M16A1 ISraeli SDM.
I couldn't justify that if I paid someone to wrute a justification.

And after that I want ...
And after that I want....
And after that I want.....

.

Know the feeling..M16a4 clone pics

Well, I finally finished my build.  The folks at Bravo Co. and Del-Ton were a great help.  My big thanks to ADCO for the upper.  It's atop the as yet unopened Dillon RL550B and accessories I just got (no ammo=no shooting high-power matches this year).

The ASA lower is an early one (probably LMT-made), came from a spare match rifle with over 3000 rounds through it w/o problems.  Yeah, I hated Bob, too!

ADCO custom match carbine upper (RRA flattop/BCG with 1/8 16" Wilson SS barrel, KG coated, "F" FSB and Daniel Defense 7.0 FF forend)
ARMS 40L BUIS
M.I. sling attachment for forend
TA01NSN ACOG
Mil-spec M4 stock
Viking tactical sling
Tango Down battle grip and VFG

The M1 carbine is a Winchester manuf. date is later 44'
Remington 870, a must for every family.
Springfield M1A, The best battle rifle ever accompanied by a Springfield XD .40
Last but not least my Bushmaster with Aimpoint and "flare" launcher which is only for the looks. Damn thing gets heavy after a bit.

Well I broke down and did it. I traded in the Bushmaster and the launcher. I decided to go back with the M4 style and got a DPMS, which I have had my eye on. It's nice, I find that it has a very solid feel to it. With it I had a UTG rail system put on with a CAA 4 position buttstock. Surefire foregrip is in the mail. (its a knock off but its the same company I got my aimpoint clone from and I haven't noticed any difference between it and the real ones I have compared it to. Not to mention its taken a decent beating and still works awsome.) Been debating whether to sell my left nut and get a real aimpoint or eotech. However I'm about to deploy for a year and wont have time to use any of it so its probably a moot point. Having the launcher was fun and it looked sweet but all and all it was pointless, not to mention the rounds were 33 smackaroos a pop. One of these days it will get all the goodies I see on the other rifles in here, which I must say look sweet. New stick below.
