Well after much research I have determined that Mace, Flail and Morning star are used interchangably.  A spiked headed ball on a fixed handle is also a morning star.  A morning star can be a flail type or mace type.  Its very confusing.  I also didnt realise grown men run around in the woods with toy medievel weapons playing D&D beating the crap out of each other... kind of like airsoft with midevil weapons and alter ego character names.  Very disturbing stuff.  Even more distubing this started in the great state of Texas...

Example of mace/morning star being same thing.  The more correct term would be morning star as its more specific so its a FF MS.

Damn.  I was going to go over all this myself but didn't want to give away that I was a D&D geek myself.  My dictionary says the flail is the ball and chain mounted on a staff, that may be the difference.  I used to encounter this whole argument frequently when I was young and into D&D (cause I had no girlfriend).  The SCA is popular and active in Alaska as well.  I have friends that have forged their own weapons as well, including some wicked maces!

Sorry for the interruption, back to the thread!

The way I've always understood it is that a mace is a metal club with a multi flanged head, a moning star is basically the same but with a spiked ball & a flail is the one with the chain.
Just don't refer to them as "wife beaters" or you'll get a funny look.........did this once at the RenFest blacksmith/armory while the blacksmiths wife was in earshot.  She knew I was being a smartass though.
I was mostly picking the the blacksmiths brain re making scale mail since at work I have access to all the scrap metal (press dept) I could ever ask for.   Yet another unfinished project...

What is really going to cost a lot, over the years, is the subscription fee to the Sunday NFL package from Direct-TV, so you can watch multiple games on all the optics.
