How many mags you got?  If you got a mag, and it isn't loaded, it's time to get some ammo for it.
If you have a semi-automatic and you have unloaded magazines laying around (that you plan to use for SHTF), you might as well use them for bricks.

No matter how fast you can load a mag, having an empty mag and loose ammo laying around in a gun fight will make your uber-tactical gun about as useless as an expended case.

+1 if you got mags load them!! there is no reason not to have them loaded and ready to go.

following mags are loaded with 30 rounds of 68gr black hills heavy match JHP
1 in the Bushy, 6 in my tac vest, and 1 more at top of the closet

4 more mags of Q3131 at top of closet.

rest of my AR mags are plinking ammo and i dont count on that ammo for defensive usage.

For my Glock 17, 3 mags of Federal HST 147gr in tac vest, one in the gun itself, and 3 more at the top of the closet.

Remy 870, 7 rounds of Ranger reduced recoil 00B, 5 more on a shoulder saddle, then another 30 or so boxed in the closet.  I have about 200 rounds of slugs, and 200 rounds of pmc full power 00B downstairs in my range ammo that i could dip into if the situation required.

AK-47.  I normally dont keep a mag in this, but there are 4 mags of wolf 123 JHP in the closet, and down in my range ammo, i got another 8 mags loaded as well.  This is my loaner gun (as in, loan to a trusted friend/family member if the situation is ugly (ala NOLA) ).

What kind of boxes are those?  They hold the mags nicely.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.I heard that keeping a mag loaded for a long period of time will weaken  the spring and will not feed correctly. Is this true.Say you have a mag loaded for one year, would it feed correctly after being loaded for that period of time?

From what I know they only weaken if they are loaded and unloaded many times...........If your going to load them keep them that way...............................Good luck....

Right before katrina, I found a loaded mag that I had stashed for about two years. I took it to the range and it functioned just fine.

This is a myth. You can safely keep them loaded for many years. There have been 1911 magazines loaded since WWII found, and they cycled in a gun just fine. You put wear and tear on a magazine by compressing and un-compressing the spring.

I shot an AK magazine through my MAK-90 that had been loaded since 1996.  Every round went through it without incident in October 2005.  My only concern with an AR mag would be that it "may" buldge slightly if left loaded for nearly six years.

Does anyone know the military standard for loading magazines?

I keep a ready tactical bag with 6 loaded GI mags with Magpul orange followers.  They are loaded with my tactical round, 72 grain Berger bthp driven by 24 grains of TAC in Lake City brass.  I have two bandoliers with stripper clips ready to go.  The same bag has a H K USP9 with 4 mags loaded with Winchester Ranger 127 grain loads.

A second tactical bag has a SOCOM16 with 6 mags loaded with M-80 ball.  This bag has a Taurus92 with 6 17 round mags each with the same Winchester Ranger ammo.  I have two bandoliers with M-80 ball in stripper clips if needed.

I have 4 more Magpul mags ready to be loaded if necessary and three ammo boxes of G I mags I use for range mags.  I can use all of them if necessary.

Total of 5 AR mags loaded up, and 3 G26 mags.

One in the bedside stand & 2 more in a pouch on the duty belt, plus 2 mags on the bedside stand for the Witness along with 2 on the belt.

5.56 is M193, 55gr.  and the 9mm is 124 gr. Gold Dot +P's.

Also keep 200 rds. of 5.56 & 100 rds. 9mm in the BOB.

If it looks like a SHTF situation (ex. hurriccane), then I'll start loading things up!  Otherwide, I can handle most anything PLAUSIBLE with what I have at hand.  Somehow, most days, I have too many other pressing issues to spend my evenings stuffing mags!

For AR's I don't see the sense in keeping more than I can possibly carry loaded.  I have 14 30rd mags loaded, plus one in M4.  I have 8 20rd mags, plus one in my POF.  Which gun I grab will have a loaded mag plus 22 backup mags.  This is more than LRP/LRRP/Rangers carried in Vietnam.  Some carried up to 22 mags, but theirs were 20rd mags usually down-loaded to 18 rounds.  I have seven G17 mags plus one in the pistol.

Hey All you guys who keep loaded mags around for home defense. How many rounds do you load in a 30 round mag, a 20 round mag. I got a few box suckers in .308, .223, and 9MM and .45.
Even a mini 30.  If its 30 rounds I load 25, if its 20 I load 15/16 depends on how tight the spring feels.
The mini 30 and some poor quality mags got me to start loading up less than capacity. Some of my military buddies say that they have always been taught to never fill it to the brim.
In contrast My 1911 only gets Chip McCormick 8 round mags they get loaded with 8. Quality!!

I thougt it would be great to get some opinions back from folks who keep loaded mags around. Do you ever unload some of them and let the springs rest. Do you take 'em down and clean the wooly buggers out of them ocassionaly? I like things that function when you need them so maintenance is cherished around here.

By the way this is my first post. learning to use the editor.

I kept eight 30rd mags loaded with thirty rounds for three years.  I took them out a few months ago to empty (fire).  I couldn't get any of the eight to seat at all.  They bounced of the bolt back into my hands.  I now down-load them to 28rds.  I've had no such problem with 20rd mags.
