I bought a Varmint (20" Stainless Bull Barrel) setup as my first AR (I didn't know much of anything when it came to ARs because I'd always been a bolt-gun guy) because I thought it would be a simple transition into the AR field. I shot it, loved it, but went back to pick up some iron sights to mount below my scope and left with a little KISS rifle (16", A2 upper, sliding stock) to go with it. So, it took me about 4 hours (I was at the range for 3 and a half hours trying it out...

13 years.  My old A2 from the early 90's was cool and all but it did not give my BRD.  I didn't catch BRD until about 2 years ago when the modularity of the platform really started to open up in my eyes.   I would submit that it is MUCH easier to catch BRD in the last 5 years and especially the last 3 years due to the following factors:

1. Sunset of the AWB in 2004.
2. Standardized modular platform design allowing many different vendors to offer guns, parts, accesories and furniture to the same spec. allowing the consumer HUGE choices.
3. Flat top Upper Receivers, Picatinney rail adoption
4. Advances in Optics technology.

The aftermaket of quality suppliers like Magpul and Aimpoint and innovations to come to the platform within the last 5 years are huge.  Optics technology and flat top receivers has in my opinion revolutionized the the old A2 fixed carry handle AR of the 70's 80's and early 90's.  Add in cool high quality flashlights and other goodies and it has changed the whole deal since the early days.

My 5.56 cents

4 years, 4 months.  Went from just a 20" A2 I still shoot and love to building an M4gery like I carried (ACOG, KAC rail, M951, et al).

Bought my first LRB Arm's with Model 1 M4 upper Nov. 08, Built a DPMS 6.8SPC by Feb. 09, sold the LRB in May 09 and bought a Colt 6920. I now have a Larue Stealth upper and just bought a DD Recon barrel for a Recce build, so that's 3 guns bought but only 2 kept in 8 months, but the Recce build now will put me down for a third and think one more in an SPR config. will do it for me as of now.

I had to fund a lot of reloading equipment and components in the last 8 months also but am well stocked, so that kinda slowed things down to an extant but I'm finished with all the little precision loading tools that complete the loading part, so it's back to the guns for now.

Does this cont as BRD?

Built/bought my first AR this time last year.  I assumed that the odds were too high that Hillary or Obama would get elected and decided to build an AR(just in time!).  I bought a Stag lower locally for $100 and then bought a complete(used) Colt A2 upper with stock and LPK for $600 something.  Only spent ~$750 to get the rifle and a few mags together.

So, one year and no new AR.  I have considered getting a 16" lightweight midlength carry handle upper when prices return to normal.  We'll see.

I'm much more interested in buying ammo(5.56, 9mm, and M2 .30-06) right now.

About a year. It took a long time to finsish my first rifle. The gun itself has about $2400 in it (not including anything that isn't mounted on the rifle), with about another $1000 in mags, cases, tools, etc. Now I'm having MSTN build me a recce upper, and I think this rifle will top out around $4600, depending on the optic I choose. I would rather have two or three loaded out, purpose built rifles instead of having a safe full of plain jane ones.

My thinking is purchase a well-rounded gun collection instead of buying multiple guns of the same type.

So I have two Assault rifles (1 Eastern, 1 Western), 1 Precision Sniper Rifle, a full size high capacity 9mm handgun, a concealable 9mm handgun, and a Classic 1911 .45.
I think it's a well-rounded collection and it's the reason why I haven't purchased more than 1 AR-15.  But I have purchased spare part kits and bolts etc. for most of the rifles
and plenty of Clips and Mags for all the guns + A TON of AMMO and .50 Ammo Cans.

Only have 1 coplete AR, but it took me 1 month to buy a lower & then another lower about 10 months after that. Waiting for things to slow down before I start to build these puppies.

It took me a very long time to get my second AR rifle, after my second it got quicker like every year.

Rifles:

1st SP1 in 1971
2nd A2 SP2 in 1984
3rd A2 HBAR in 1986

Carbines:

1st A2 SP2 in 1985
2nd Sporter Lightweight in 1991
3rd 6721 in 2005

1971 I think I was in 1st/2nd grade

born 65

Yup, summer '71 was a very good time, just graduated from high school, was in Seattle then, got about $200 money from graduation and birthday gifts so I got my first brand new AR from a surplus store in downtown Seattle.

Used that first AR for 13 years without any problems and sold it in excellent used condition to buy my second A2 SP2 AR which is my first with 1/7 twist A2 barrel, A2 furniture, and forward assist.

That was a great time too because I also got a new Springfield M1A National Match (M14 type) rifle but I still prefer my AR.

I only got 100 bucks in 1983 for graduation

I did buy a Colt AR15 so after

But sold it not to long after

I wish I had it now

The lower had Full auto on the selector Marksing
And you could put the selector on Full auto but it would cause a jam every time I fired it. I was a newbie
I bought it from a older man who said he got it when he was in the military
I havent seen a Colt lower like in since

I can't afford a second one!  But over the last year or so, I've been concentrating on building up a good supply of spare parts and ammo.

I picked up a stripped lower the same day I bought my first ar(M&P15T). Might have bought the lower first even although I think I picked up the M&P then grabbed the stag lower from another shop. Picked up a stag LPK for it the same day. Ordered a stock kit direct from stag later in the week. After a month or so I decided on a stag left handed 6.8 upper and ordered it for the spare lower.

Those were my 2 rifles for a year or so until I ordered a marked stag 6.8 lower for the upper. Came in right after the election. Built it up for my 6.8(yes having it marked 5.56 bothered me enough to change it). Local range got a supply of stag uppers in like maybe in December or January or something and I picked up a basic stag 5.56 upper with removable carry handle for like 4 bucks over retail to finish off the spare upper I had.

Have 2 stripped lowers and parts kits right now to do something with. Thinking of a 20 inch ar if anyone ever gets the uppers in stock with chrome lined barrels(prob pick up a bravo company when they get them back in stock in a few months).

I just bought my first complete lower yesterday, picking up at least two more this week, and who knows from there.  I had the addiction before, just didn't have the means to feed it.  Now that I do, watch out!

It was pretty much less than a month for me. The first one I bought was a Colt with a 24" SS bbl. Not much fun to carry around. So I went out and bought my first M4gery and fell in love.

Wanted to get a Colt 6920 but didn't think I could have one in NY. That said I bought a Bushmaster M4gery. Two weeks later I bought a 6920. About 2 months later I bought another 6920 and decided to sell the Bushmaster to take the sting out of buying the second Colt. Nothing wrong with the Bushmaster, but I figured matching Colts was a good thing. You know I'm still not happy about losing the Bushmaster. I hate to sell guns.
