I don't really know. My Dissy has a nice 2 stage RRA trigger, but I spend more time looking at it than shooting it. This will change.

From the sitting position, elbows on knees; I can make 7 out of 10 shots hit the head 6"X6" square on IDPA target at 300yds very consistently.

My 2 farthest shots with iron sights from the prone are 625 meters and 575 meters on a pop up target range. 300 meter targets all day.

The AR-15A2 is more than capable of hitting man sizd targets to 600 yards. The shooter has to know how, though.

I never said it wouldn't . I have shot my 5.56's out to 500 yards , but past 200m I want an optic and a larger round . it's a simple matter of the right tool for the job .

When we first got our M16A2 in the late 80s, we would go to the Know Distance range and engage out to 600 yds (older range, 100 yd increments) and using M193 ball would hit a E type silhoute 3 out 4 rounds.

Realise when reading all this if it was a day with wind in a random direction and the enemy was at an unknow distance greater than 300 yrds but less than 1000 yards with say an 8mph cross wind and your going prone on uneven groiund most of these people would miss the first shot and you dont always get a second chance.

I routinely hit a 15"x15" steel gong out at about 440 yards at my local range, using irons, so I'm willing to bet I could consistantly hit a man sized target out to 600 yards or so... probably around 70% would get 'em.

And that's compensating for wind drift, uneven ground, movement of tectonic plates, and the coriolis effect of the earth's rotation, Devl.

ive had my AR for about 5 weeks now and last weekend i was hitting a 12"x12" target at 300 yards sitting and prone 9/10 or 10/10 times for about 30 mins. after that it got "boring" now i need to find a place to do 400 and 500 yards where they dont have to close down some side so no one gets hit downrange.

I tried 600 yards prone once with a M4 shooting Fed Gold match. I had around a 22" 10 round group. I don't think I want to try it again. My neck and eyes were hurting for hours after that.

Most I have done is 600M from the sitting position and 800M from the prone reliably with a rack grade M16A4. I know it cann be brought out to 1000 but I have never shot a 1000M course with an AR style rifle.

I use to shoot NRA Hi-Power, so I have done it and seen it done too many times out to 600 yards to question the rifle's capability. Now the shooter's ability, that is entirely another story.

While I don't disagree with you, the best weapon for the job is the one you have in your hands when it comes time to do the job.

I make it a point to be able to hit man sized targets at the max effective range of all my rifles, regardless of whether or not they are the ideal tool.

With a Sierra 80 or JLK 90, once. When it hits the berm behind the ten ring.

My range only goes out to 200 yds and I hit, I haven't shot more than 200 yards so I wouldn't know

The range I shoot at is only 100 yards, and I havent taken my AR anywhere else yet.
At 100 though, I can avg about 4-5 inch group head shots....and at least 95 out of 100 shots....into a life size silloutte.

I have to believe I could easily take shots on center mass at 200-250 without an issue getting 90% hit rate all day long. This is from a bench, no bags, and slow fire.

Standing, I can make the shots...but the % goes down to maybe 60-70%

I say that because I'm not quite 'reliable' yet shooting 600yds, and I've never done standing or sitting behind 200...

If I can hit a NRA bulls-eye reliably at that range, I can hit a man...

Most all of the width of a man size target.

I would say a bit more, The front sight is body width at 150M, 1/2 body width at 300M, and 1/4 body width at 450M. At least that is what is on my data card for the M16A4 from SDM school.
