I can barely see the steel plate at 217 yrds.  How do you see it at 300?  You have good eyes.

I painted it orange.

If its possible to shoot it at that range, why not do it?

I have shot with my acog at dog targets at 600 on my A4 and gotten good amounts of hits, I view red dots as 300 and below and with an ACOG I bet you could get 700 pretty good, never found anywhere where I could shoot 700 though.

We were taking shots at guys in Iraq past 700, dont know if we hit them for sure, but one guy swears up and down he hit one of them.
