They certainly look interesting.

hey, I just sold one of those! Mike |
Well Magpul is slow to release lowers, and will only release them in small numbers. So I'm hopefull many AR manufacturers will adopt the improvement seen in the Magpul prototypes. It would be stupid for Magpul to patent improvements on a product they have no intention of selling in significant numbers. |
I ordered one of these lowers. I am interested to see it up close.
sshhhh.... |
glad to see someone else bought one.you will be impressed when you get it.probably the nicest fin ish on a lower that ive saw .
Do these lowers have a caliber marking on it or is it marked multi?
Am I missing something here, or is a forging not generally stronger than a billet of the same material? It also typically requires less machining. The point of forging is to more closely align the grain boundaries with the shape of the finished product. I don't get the hype.
My only data point is that pressure containing elements with which I am used to dealing with, i.e. high pressure valves, fittings, etc. are always forged. Please enlighten me of the benefits associated with the premium price. |
It's not the strength of the lower that is considered as it doesn't bear much stress during the firing cycle. It's the features not found on a standard forged lower because of the raw forging that these lowers seek to remedy, such as the integral trigger guard and beveled magazine well.
yak |
I can appreciate the benefit of a beveled mag well, but that could be easily incorporated into a forging if it is so necessary. The integral trigger guard does not seem to offer any appreciable benefit.
It seems to be more about bling versus function or reliability. YMMV. |
yep, bling. Some of us genuinely LOVE this shit. My firearms are functional tools, as well as unadulterated obsession to me. |
It removes several parts and pieces, as well as the necessity to drill straight holes. It's more durable, more comfortable, more functional and it even looks better.
i dont really agree with any of these assertions. More durable? show me the data. More comfortable? never held one. Drill straight holes? does a CNC have magic drill bits? more functional? i dont see how.. Looks better? Now you are talkin. |
well no presents in the mail yet? i had mine in about a week.
just got mine today. looks REAL nice. |
well i am glad i am not the only one who think these guys make some nice shit!
in all honesty its the nicest lower reciever i have ever seen. Much nicer proportions and lines than the other billet offerings on the market. That is one of the things i have never liked about the SunDevil and POF lowers is the hard, sharp lines and angles. The SMOS lower has much more "classic" lines...more similar to a milspec forged lower. |
tagged for future SMOS purchase.
All my lowers are forged, I need a Billet lower now. CELEBRATE DIVERSITY! |
You got SN: 0 ??? Photoshop?
Anyway that is one sweet ass lower. Machine work and Finish looks outstanding!!! You know what I just noticed.... Support built in for the front pivit pin. Another great feature. |
photoshop cut/paste, repeat. |
good catch. that's beautiful machine work and attention todetail. I noticed all remotely sharp edges were radiused. Looks like I'll have to wait until after Christmas, but I'm looking forward to getting one. |
It'd be cool to see a "Midlength Lower" (and upper) - something that could accomodate say a 2.525" overal length round (mid way between AR15 and AR10) in say 7mm.
Maybe...someday... |
i bought the high end model originally. i think i may have to dip into my christmas stash and purchase the standard model now.looking at the pictures it looks to be everybit as nice as mineand half the price.thanks for the good pictures you made up my mind for me...
As would TSWG ... you need lower, mags, upper with bolt. c/h, carrier, firing pin, etc... gets costly ... would you settle for 2.325" ? |
Lets see pics of the lower with the new trigger guard. |
It's the one at the top of this page, page one has the old one.
i had custom selector markings put on both sides. i was looking at a power strip when i thought of it. it turned out really well.
i apologize for my lack of photographic skill... http://www.tabletsoforion.com/lower/lower1.jpg http://www.tabletsoforion.com/lower/lower2.jpg (edited because i can't type) |
HMM-364 is a Marine Corps helicopter squadron that used to be stationed in Hawaii. Good looking lower. |
Very attractive, and nice machining. |
So where can I pick up a couple of these? |
Larue Tactical will have them with their State logo it seems. Shot Show Pics
Where can I get one, can I stop by in Grants Pass and pick one up at the factory?... |
why dont you call the folks at SMOSARMS.COM and ask yourself?
Having seen the Larue lowers.... I can tell you that, these are really nice!!! Mike |
Well, he may have a point on the "more durable" part. From what I've seen, the most likely thing to be damaged on a lower is the trigger guard "ears" during assembly. More folks have posted tales of woe about that than all other problems combined. For an SBR build, not having a trigger guard may be a decent feature. That is one less thing to get damaged and mess up your $200 investment. A bit of a reach, I admit, but "shit happens" and all that rot. The irony of being one of the few would be of little comfort as you stare down at your FUBARed SBR lower. Are these SMOS lowers engraved before finishing? If I could get one engraved with the required SBR engraving, before it is anodized, that would save me the $25 engraving costs as well as the cost of a reanodize job. How much does one of these things cost? |

Has anyone here had experience with both POF AND SMOS billet lowers? can you send ,me a
mini review of a coomparison of the two and if you have a VIS upper pix of the fit of both lowers thanks ammilion |
So SMOS will machine custom selector marking huh? thats way cool
