Could anyone suggest a .22lr 8-12” dedicated upper, that is in stock or doesn’t have 12 week lead time?
I ordered one with CMMG but the back order tells me 20+ weeks. I just really don’t want to wait that long. |
|
Sadly, I've not found any. Had an order two months in with CMMG, cancelled it. Really the only hard part to find is the barrel. Upper, bolt w/collar, handguard and charging handle are all available at Righttobear.com. .22 barrels show up on the EE here upon occasion.

Build it yourself. Shop around and you can find some good deals. If you want a plinker, Righttobear is a good place to get CMMG bolts and barrels. If you want something more accurate, have you checked out Compass Lake?

Appreciate all the info.
I think the consensus is to find a barrel, everything else does appear to be semi readily available. So if anyone comes across an in-stock .22lr barrel 8-12”, please let me know… All .22lr barrels and completed uppers on RTB are out of stock. Compass lake looks like just 20”+ and I just am looking for a plinker. 1k$ is a little pricy.. but can’t really be picky either. Part of me wants to just use a .223/5.56 barrel and deal with the 1:7 twist but I have no idea how accurate that would be... |
|
I'd highly suggest holding out for a dedicated .22 LR barrel. With that said, at modest distances, in my experience, accuracy isn't horrendous with a 16" 1:7 5.56 barrel. However, you'll need to use the CMMG bolt w/chamber adapter instead of the barrel collar. This of course gives you the option to shoot 5.56 in your pistol. You'll have the gas coming into the bolt for no good reason, just have to clean it more often and shoot a couple 5.56 rounds from time to time to blow the crap out of the gas tube.
So I guess it's up to you if the dual caliber option is worth the loss in accuracy and extra mess from the gas tube (no getting around the fact that a BB .22 is going to make a mess anyway). I lucked into a CMMG 4.5" barrel here on the EE, so they do show up if you're patient. |

You might not be interested but the S&W M&P 15-22 pistol is pretty easy to find under $500.
I have been looking for .22lr uppers to build dedicated rimfire AR's and ended up getting a couple 15-22's. |

Plus I believe I've read that the poly upper won't mate to a regular AR lower w/o some modification (no personal experience). For the cost, I think it makes sense to build one's own dedicated upper. I know poly is fine for a .22, but I'm personally rather fond of aluminum and the ability to use any standard AR accessories. |
|
I’m not a fan of the polymer uppers like used in S&W 15-22 or Chiappa dedicated 22 uppers. The more rigid aluminum is the way to go IMHO. The KE Arms one piece polymer lowers look very promising if you want a fixed stock.

|
Putting together a .22 upper couldn't be much easier. The only thing you need to do is torque the barrel nut, bolt on your handguard and drop in the bolt. Perhaps 15 minutes total.

RIght To Bear is GTG. Anderson or MAS Defense blem uppers are inexpensive. It took me maybe 2-3 months to gather everything for an upper, and I’m cheap and was shopping around. |
|
Consider the 4.5" bbl. It will keep most bulk pack ammo subsonic if you might want to suppress.

PM sent to OP.
ETA: OK, I’ll post it up here, too, since OP said he/she was looking for a shorter barrel- AIM Surplus has Tippmann Arms 22LR rifles in stock. |

Appreciate the info everyone.
I already have a lower for this build so I am not looking for complete rifles/pistols at the moment. I started buying parts and building before I realized how rare dedicated .22lr uppers are... |
|
I am still looking...
One showed up on an auction site... but I lost out when it went for double list price. I wish CMMG would at least respond to my emails and say “yes, it’s still coming.” I have been waiting 17 weeks. |

Rtb has you halfway there if you can build yourself: https://www.righttobear.com/RTB-4-5-inch-22LR-barrel-Bolt-Mags-p/rtb-22ba487-rtb-pcc-3.htm

Quoted: Just need to find a barrel View Quote That's a big need. :) I am looking for whatever becomes available first.. barrel or completed assembly. As Dave80 pointed out, I can build around a barrel if I find one (Pistol length < 8", 1:10 - 1:16 twist, .22lr). They just have been unavailable, at least through my searches. |

We're making big investments in machinery this year, with 22lr being the main driving force. For our next few batches of 22 barrels, we're still relying on contractors but once we're up and running in our new facility early next year, we'll have a steady supply of RTB in-house .22LR, 5.56, 300 Blackout barrels.

Late to the OP, but Midway USA has the Nordic 9.25 complete upper for just under $500: 9.25" barrel, uses Black Dog magazine.
First time I have seen them for sale in a long time. Mine is a little different model, but it has worked flawlessly (about 1,000 rounds). Nordic made the DPMS 22LR uppers. |

Do you need a dedicated 22 rf upper to build on or would a regular upper work as well? It looks like the only difference is the size of the ejection port.
