Now for the question.

What is the best way to mount an optic on it?

I am clueless and need a place to start.

Lets start with what kind of optic you're planning to mount. That will help narrow things down a bit.

Generally speaking, if you're mounting a scope of some sort, you're probably looking at using the side rail. If you're looking at a red dot, you can use the side rail, replace the rear sight with a mount, replace the gas tube with a mount, or get a railed handguard.

I'm guessing your rifle doesn't have a side rail though I could be wrong. I have the same rifle I got in 2007 and it doesn't have one.

You could mount a smaller red dot on an Ultimak rail.
