So I'm planning to do a full Zhukov handguard on my new AK. This means the handguard retainer needs to go. I know I can cut it off with a dremel, but I'm scared of nicking the barrel if I slip!

I could knock out the pins on the front sight and gasblock I suppose, but I'd be worried about getting the front sight back on straight if I do that.

Any tips?

cut just enough with the dremel so when you latch onto it with pliers or vice grips it peels off

I cut mine off... the knick looks more like a scratch but it is covered by the handguard

Well, If anyone is reading and curious, what I ended up doing was using a tube from a can of WD-40, (little red straw) to hold the retainer away from the barrel. That gave me enough margin of space that I only took a tiny bit of finish off the barrel.

I'm pretty happy with the way the rifle turned out.
