Of all things why did they leave the spine on the mag during the design and manufacturing? I'm not engineer, but the best I can think of was to save cost/labor during the stamping and welding process. But then again they are commies so cost and labor was a not issue.

Easier to spot weld?

Easier to make and stronger. Industrial inertia possibly as well...

Note the Chinese "flat back" design. Seems perfectly functional and durable.

I'm sure it's just easier to make with a spline.

Also stronger, as if they needed that.

Pretty sure this.  Also all the tolerances are in the bending process that can be jigged up or in a die.  The spine being bent is just part of the stamping and no worries about spot weld quality, spacing or spread.

Sergi!!!  This your job!  Squeeze this together and put 6 welds. Be done with 1000 by lunch!

The spines are welded around 5:30.  The Chicom flatback mags require a few additional steps.
