I'm getting more and more interested in doing a modernized AK build with MLOK Rail, collapsible stock kit, upgraded trigger etc.

Would one of the new WASR10's be a good base option for something like this or is it always better to spend a little more money and go with ARSENAL?

TIA

On one hand i'd say buy the best you can afford.

On the other hand I usually recommend a WASR for a first time owner. You never know, you might not like AK's all that much, so a smaller initial investment makes sense and the WASR is as "standard" as it gets so pretty much any AK accessory available will fit it. If you don't like it trust me somebody will buy it from you easily, then you can go with an Arsenal if you feel like you want a nicer rifle.

In my opinion, for the amount of money you'd spend getting a WASR modernized, you might as well spend it on an AK that's already modernized, the Galil ACE, and add the RS Regulate GAR MLOK handguard:

If you are used to an AR modernizing an AK will drive you nuts. That being said this is what my WASR currently looks like:

I tried an Ultimak on it and didn’t like how hot the optic got. So now I think I’m going to try a MI side rail.

Are there any Fullsized Arsenal’s available right now? Only thing I have seen is the UR, CR and milled variants

What series?

Edit: I just checked K-Var and looks like only the 106 is available.

The Palmeto folding stock rifle has been tempting me for a cheapish rifle to play around with.

Every wasr I have ever had has been good as well.

MAK-90s are decently priced...I got mine last year for $650.  I've dubbed this one my "beater rifle" that has 2K+ rounds w/o so much as a patch down the bore...it runs like a Int'l. Harvester.

If you get a straight cut MAK it will take pretty much all “normal” AK accessories. The tang is a bit longer so some stocks won’t work but the handguard are normal AK affair. If the muzzle is turned down far enough to can even thread it without much issue.

Everyone above has some solid suggestions. This one's pricey,  but just another sweet option you may consider

Atlantic sells DIY barreled receiver kits missing the furniture and fcg. This one is built on a milled sharps bros receiver that already accepts a buffer tube rather than needing to buy an adapter. The barrel is an FB radom chf cl barrel. Its also got a 90 degree gas block with shortened gas system so you can sbr it if you want to (or chop the barrel and perm mount some other muzzle device ). But its definitely set up for you to take it down a modernized route

Im having trouble pasting link for some reason. But its under their Atlantic arms mfg > pro series

KS47 Gen 2 or CMMG Mutant MK47. Doesn't make sense to have a modern AK unless its 5.45x39r

For a modern AK do 5.45x39 as a base.  There is a pile of good upgrades around.  Dublin AK systems RCS is amazing, Legion USA has a few good Russian parts like upgraded safeties, RS Regulate make good optic mounts or you could do Tech Sights for an iron sights build.  It's a wide world of modern AK parts now.

The 5.45 glory days are over and I wouldn’t get one now. I’d rather have a 5.56 AK than a 5.45.

Agreed.  I wish I'd been in the AK game 15 years ago and I'd have a 5.45 with a great stockpile of ammo.  I think it's more likely than not that there's an import ban on Russian ammo, so not a great time to be picking up a 5.45.

I guess I'll be the dissenting opinion on the 5.45. Everyone seems to discount the 5.45 because of the import ban on surplus ammo, but I find current production 5.45 pretty much everywhere I buy ammo right next to the 7.62x39 and 5.56. In fact, I still find old threads where people talk about how they thought 7.62x39 was dead after the surplus ban, yet here we are. It seems that every day I find more and more aftermarket 5.45 parts and accessories becoming available from Russia and US sources, so I'm not sure why it shouldn't be considered. If you only do your ammo shopping at Walmart, then maybe you'd have a hard time.

Take Ant1-Liberal's advice. Get yourself a Mak90. My Spiker, Type 56s, and Mak90 are all three better rifles than my SGL21 (Saiga). The Saiga is a great rifle, but it's going to be much more work to convert and modernize, and more expensive. It just doesn't make sense when the Mak90 is an overall better rifle.

100% agree, 5.45 is so far from dead it isn't even funny.  It's still cheaper that most 5.56 right now too.  Rifles are still around and there are so many great mag options around now. GT and Tula and Silver bear ammo, still cheap 7n6 around too. Less recoil, and in general more fun.

Want to feel bad about an AR? Get out a chrono next to 5.45.

I just paid my down payment for those 12" 5.45x39 pistol builds that are starting soon.  Super excited.

Is that an original Galil folding stock? If so, did it bolt right on? would original HGs fit?

If you aren’t heavily invested in 7.62x39 you have a chance to get into 5.45 . Seems like the quality 5.45 aks are running double or triple the price now . So now we are back to 7.62 .. yah the ammo is available and it is a better round but do you want to make the initial investment on a overpriced rifle ?

If theirs anybody that has a fm74 or a sgl 31 for around $900  to help the OP out ?

My honest advice is to pick up a fox rifle from Atlantic firearms . If you don’t like it theirs a bunch of variant collectors that would take it off your hands at a $100-150 loss to you. Wasr would be the same loss but would take much longer to sell

PM me for contact info, if you aren't prepared to pay heavily for it though...  they are going to be nice, but those parts add up fast like the 4.5mm rear, the Mod 1 and the Sba3 (or whatever) plus the base kit and the labor.  Not cheap...

What's your budget?  All good suggestions here and while both Rifle Dynamics and Krebs make solid rifles you might get more satisfaction from doing it yourself with a solid base rifle and going from there.  My first AK was an Arsenal SLR-107 which I ended up installing a JMac Customs folding adapter to go with Magpul furniture, and TWS dustcover and Primary Arms 4X and ALG trigger.  I agree that if you're used to ARs it's not the same when it comes to AKs and it can be a little frustrating at times.  NOTHING wrong with going 5.45 either; I have a couple of Arsenal 105s and the ammo/mags are readily available and it's a fun caliber that recoils softer than 7.62 and shoots flat.  I also have an 5.56/.223 AK (braced M85) and it's a massively overbuilt tank that I enjoy shooting and recoils like a .22LR compared to my 7.62 AKs.  Good luck with whatever you decide, keep us posted!
